Uncovers how the Civil Rights Movement and Vatican II affected African American Catholics in Atlanta The history and practices of African American Catholics has been vastly understudied, and Black Catholics are often written off as a fringe sector of the religious population. Yet, Catholics of African descent have been a part of Catholicism since the early days of European exploration into the New World. In the Shadow of Ebenezer examines how the Civil Rights Movement and the Second Vatican Council affected African American Catholics in Atlanta, Georgia, focusing on the historic Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in the Old Fourth Ward. Our Lady of Lourdes is a neighbor of major historic Black Protestant churches in the city, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, a block away, which during the Civil Rights era was the pulpit of Martin Luther King Jr. Featuring archival and oral history sources, the book examines the religious and cultural life of the parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, showing how this Black Catholic congregation fit into the overall religious ecology of the neighborhood. Examining Our Lady of Lourdes in relation to these larger Black Protestant congregations helps to illuminate whether and how they were shaped by their place at a center of the civil rights struggle, and how religious change and social change intersect.

Misty interrupted his thoughts with a question: "Do you ever imagine you are the captain of that ship, Cirrus?" She looked at the storm-battered ship on her own ring. "You're in the midst of a terrible storm. Every mast and spar groaning under the strain of the fierce wind and the hull threatening to break up. You're wondering if it's possible to survive, to reach a safe harbor." She looked out over the ocean from their perch in the crow's nest. "Then just when you've given up, you look off the starboard bow, and through the rain, you catch sight of a bird flying in the storm. A flash of hope. And suddenly you know that if that bird can make it, so can you."Five years later, Cirrus Storm, son of the fearsome pirate Ebenezer, is lost in the darkness of his own inner turmoil. When he joins Captain Azariah on his quest to escort the kingdom's prince and princess to safety, will Cirrus also begin his own journey to find the hope he so desperately needs?

Faith in God demands obedience and trust. The authors of Ebenezer’s Grandson recount how each faltering step of obedience to that which they firmly believed to be God’s guidance, led them and their family slowly into situations where their only security was God Himself and the promises of His word. In writing this book Leonard Holder recognises the debt he and his wife Phyllis owe to the faith and prayers of earlier generations. Their journey of faith led them north to Yorkshire and then to German-speaking Europe, where after six years in Switzerland they moved into the Black Forest in southern Germany and established Haus Barnabas, a centre for evangelism and the encouragement of Christians. Phyllis writes that for years she had really no idea what she was suited to, but gradually began to sense that God was showing her how her particular gifts and personality could best serve Him. Eventually she realised that God had fulfilled this vision; it was Haus Barnabas. This book is a detailed account of the journey. Some of their experiences along the way they wouldn’t wish on anyone, but God knew the discipline and training the couple needed and His love and faithfulness is amazing.
