One book that’s been lurking in the back of my mind for a long time is a book about sex. You see, abort forty years ago while I was going through a painful divorce, I decided to teach a course called “Philosophy of Sex” at my university. My other favorite philosopher Wittgenstein once said to his student:“ What is the use of studying philosophy if all that does for you is to enable you to talk with some plausibility about some abstruse questions of logic, etc., and if it does not improve your thinking about the important questions of everyday life?” Other than the food, is there anything more significant to everyday life than sex? Yet, philosophers rarely discuss sex as a philosophical topic. I tried to apply my philosophical skills to help myself think clearly about the male-female relationships while living them. Over the years I have formed my own philosophy of sex and seriously contemplated writing a philosophical book, following my course outline with the title, “Thinking About Sex”. But such a book would be too didactic and boring. My recent writings convinced me that I write best when I let my thoughts range freely, and do not try to organize them into a set form. So there won’t be a table of contents or chapter divisions in this book. What follows are my sexual reminiscences interjected with my philosophizing about them. The events described are real, and the persons involved are real, but with names changed. Some parts of it may sound to some people like pornography, but it is actually a philosophy book. A great contemporary philosopher Noam Chomsky said,“ The job of a philosopher is to tell the truth and to expose lies.” That’s what I am trying to do. Another great philosopher Karl Marx said,“ Philosophers hitherto have only interpreted the world in various ways, the point, however, is to change it.” I am also trying to do that. This is not just a memoir, but I meant it to be a subversive track. I wish to subvert the status quo of our sexual mores. In fact, I meant this to be a Manifesto of Sexual Liberation!

In this raucous collection of true-life stories, Chelsea Handler recounts her time spent in the social trenches with that wild, strange, irresistible, and often gratifying beast: the one-night stand. You've either done it or know someone who has: the one-night stand, the familiar outcome of a night spent at a bar, sometimes the sole payoff for your friend's irritating wedding, or the only relief from a disastrous vacation. Often embarrassing and uncomfortable, occasionally outlandish, but most times just a necessary and irresistible evil, the one-night stand is a social rite as old as sex itself and as common as a bar stool. Enter Chelsea Handler. Gorgeous, sharp, and anything but shy, Chelsea loves men and lots of them. My Horizontal Life chronicles her romp through the different bedrooms of a variety of suitors, a no-holds-barred account of what can happen between a man and a sometimes very intoxicated, outgoing woman during one night of passion. From her short fling with a Vegas stripper to her even shorter dalliance with a well-endowed little person, from her uncomfortable tryst with a cruise ship performer to her misguided rebound with a man who likes to play leather dress-up, Chelsea recalls the highs and lows of her one-night stands with hilarious honesty. Encouraged by her motley collection of friends (aka: her partners in crime) but challenged by her family members (who at times find themselves a surprise part of the encounter), Chelsea hits bottom and bounces back, unafraid to share the gritty details. My Horizontal Life is one guilty pleasure you won't be ashamed to talk about in the morning.

DIRTY, RICH ONE NIGHT STAND. That's all it was supposed to be. Her. Him. Pleasure. And then a fast goodbye. He's a stranger. And yet, he's not. She knows him even though he doesn’t know her. He's the powerful attorney, now world-renowned after coming off the trial of a century which was publicized across the country. And I'm one of the reporters that sat in his courtroom. I watched him, studied him, got to know him from afar which isn't hard since I know his exact brand of confidence, arrogance, and wealth. I know his type. I've dated his type. Which is why when I happen to come face to face with him, when sparks fly and heat simmers between us, I know what happens if I say "yes" to Reese Summer. I know he'll taste like sin and sex, even before he kisses me. I know he'll feel like pleasure and passion, even before he touches me. I know he'll demand more than I wants to give, and yet, because I dare to give myself to him, the result will be deliciously hot. I know that I will not leave his bed without being utterly, completely sated. And I know that I will leave the next morning anyway. And so, I do. And so, he follows. And as the chase begins my question becomes: Is Reese Summer THE one or is he really just a dirty, arrogant lie that should have stayed a one night stand?

"I'm a big fan of Arnold Schwab's poems -- devilishly clever, and revealing, to say the least! As a ninety year old myself who hangs on to his sexuality, I give a cheer to another ninety year old who refuses to allow himself to be neutered by society's ageist prejudices and writes about his sexuality. I can't praise enough these skilful, entertaining poems that invite us to peer in through his bedroom window -- and there's plenty going on there!" -Edward Field "I love reading Arnold Schwab's poetry, and you will too. Witty, bracing, sexy, elegant, self-deprecating, but always honest, his verse covers a full range of human experience with a kind eye and understanding heart. As a craftsman in the art of poetry, he's stingy with words, choosing only the fittest. Lucky reader, see for yourself." -Leslie B. Mittleman Emeritus Professor of English, CSULB "If A. E. Housman were alive in the past three decades, he would have welcomed Arnold Schwab's keenly crafted and frank observations on life as an aging gay man. Literate, ironic, humorous, and at times poignant, these poems are a welcome addition to the canon of 21st-century poetry. Readers of any sexual orientation will find something in them to cherish and relate to." -Clifton Snider "While most writers are past their creative momentum in their eighties, Arnold Schwab's pen does not run dry. Well into his nineties he continues to write poems with news that stays news, contemplating among other themes loves that might have been, and recording underexplored frontiers of gay experience in old age. Saturated with ever present irony and humor paired with self-knowledge and expert skills, Schwab's use of vocabulary, rhyme, and meter creates a generous legacy that contributes to our knowledge of the gay human condition from youth to advanced old age. The range of themes in this collection is as impressive as the span of decades and the cultural changes it addresses." -James Benedict, PhD
