Immunointervention in Autoimmune Diseases is a collection of papers presented at the 1988 International Meeting by the same title, held in Paris, France. This text contains 21 chapters and begins with surveys of the role of antigen in autoimmune responses and the moving boundaries between physiology and pathology of immunity. The succeeding chapters deal with the regulation, immunosuppressive therapy, infections, and immunointervention of autoimmune disorders. These topics are followed by discussions of specific immunosuppressive therapy for a particular disease, including type I diabetes, T-cell leukemia, and systemic lupus erythomatosus. This work also explores the principles of allograft, the use of monoclonal antibody, and OKT3. The remaining chapters consider the maintenance of autoimmunity and the risk/benefit in immunointervention for autoimmune diseases. This book will prove useful to immunologists, pathologists, physiologists, and researchers.

Since publication of the 4th Edition of The Autoimmune Diseases in 2006, the understanding of the immune mechanisms underlying autoimmunity and autoimmune disease has significantly deepened and broadened. This fully revised 5th Edition incorporates new material and combines common themes underlying inductive and effector mechanisms and therapies that relate generally to the autoimmune disorders. It discusses the biological basis of disease at genetic, molecular, cellular, and epidemiologic levels and includes expanded coverage of autoinflammatory disease and autoimmune responses to tumors. - Gives a thorough and an important overview on the entire field, framing individual disease chapters with information that compares and contrasts each disorder and therapy - Provides thorough, up-to-date information on specific diseases, along with clinical applications, in an easily found reference for clinicians and researchers interested in certain diseases - Keeps readers abreast of current trends and emerging areas in the field - Ensures that content is not only up-to-date, but applicable and relevant

Autoimmune diseases are conditions where the immune system attacks the body organs instead of foreign invaders. This book deals with the various mechanisms by which infectious agents can trigger autoimmunity such as molecular mimicry and polyclonal activation. An overview is given with regard to bacteria, viruses, and parasites associated with autoimmunity, and a summary is given on classical autoimmune diseases and the infecting agents that can induce them. - Includes completely updated and new chapters - Brings the reader up to date and allows easy access to individual topics in one place - Identifies infectious agents as pathogenic or protective in many autoimmune diseases

This work focuses on the autoimmune processes that have now been proven to underlie a number of serious diseases, including diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Papers explore the rapidly expanding developments in research on immune response and regulation, and their potential in the development of treatments for autoimmune diseases. The wide range of subjects covered here include: the nature of intracellular and cell surface-derived ``self'' antigens; competing theories of the generation of immune tolerance and their implications of current theories for research and treatment; possible links between autoimmunity and genetic complement deficiency; the contributions of interferons and class II HLA antigen expression to autoimmunity; and the potential of monoclonal antibodies and other biotechnological advances in treating human autoimmune conditions.
