In order to gain a better understanding of how criminal justice history is presented in major motion pictures, ten such films were selected for Crime, History, and Hollywood. The films were selected as good representations of criminal justice subject matter, mostly centered on specific crimes, their investigation, and courtroom outcomes. Films made across a wide range of times were also selected, and ones that represented American history from the mid-1800s (Amistad) and into the 1970s (All the President's Men). The most important aspect of the film selection was that they were based on actual historical events. While films such as the Shawshank Redemption and Twelve Angry Men are excellent criminal justice films, they are not based on true historical crimes or events. Each film (chapter) will open with an introduction to the historical event and film. The authors will then present the true historical events that the film was based on. Next, they will present a review of the film's narrative and how Hollywood portrayed the historical event. It should be noted here that the viewing of the film would best complement this section of each chapter. Then a review of the historical accuracy of each film will be reviewed, mentioning the various types of historical inaccuracies employed in each film. Finally, each chapter will present a conclusion in regard to the accuracy of the film, a list of books for further reading on the topic, and the endnotes. "Their passion for history shines through their writing, which is clear, engaging, and efficient....an important contribution to criminological studies of crime films..." -- Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Books "[The] book creates a wonderful path for discussion and connection." -- Lee Ayers, Criminal Justice Review 39(4) PowerPoint slides are available to professors upon adoption of this book. One in four people in the US has a criminal record; four in four have a criminal history. These are their stories. We Are All Criminals combines criminal justice statistics and statutes with compelling photography and first-person narrative to personalize the destruction caused by decades of mass criminalization, while leaving the reader with a sense of hope and inspiration to affect change. From the pediatrician who blew up a porta potty to the chiefs of police who burglarized a liquor warehouse to the countless students who smoked and sold pot, this 279 page photo-packed book is filled with stories of people who got away with crimes--and parallel stories of people laboring under the stigma of a criminal record. It's an examination of criminality, privilege, punishment, and second chances. Woven throughout is incisive commentary on the havoc our carceral state has wreaked upon the nation; the disparate impact of our legal system on poor communities and communities of color; and the exploration of innumerable life barriers created by criminal and juvenile records.

The use of image-based evidence in international criminal prosecutions is at a tipping point. In his pioneering book on the topic, Jonathan W. Hak, KC provides critical insight into the authentication and interpretation of images, setting out how images can be effectively used in the search for the truth. While images can convey vital information more efficiently and effectively than words alone, the biases of photographers, the use of image-altering technology, and the generation of images with artificial intelligence can lead to mischief and injustice. In this context, images must be effectively authenticated and interpreted to establish their true meaning. Addressing the growing need for visual literacy, Jonathan W. Hak's Image-Based Evidence in International Criminal Prosecutions systematically explores the value of images as probative and didactic evidence in international criminal law. It analyses existing challenges in the creation, acquisition, processing, and use of image-based evidence, making recommendations for how those challenges might be addressed. In particular, the book investigates emerging technical frontiers in image-based evidence and the potential uses for advanced visual representations like virtual reality, immersive virtual environments, and augmented reality. Ultimately, the book argues that advanced visual representations may have sufficient probative value and proposes cautious parameters for their application in the international courtroom. An essential resource for anyone working with image-based evidence, the book offers significant guidance, relevant legal and technical detail, and recommendations for the use of image-based evidence in investigations and the courtroom.
