Results of the completed 2005 Illinois annual inventory show an estimated 4.5 million acres of forest land that supports 7.6 billion cubic feet (ft3) of total net live-tree volume. Since 1948, timberland area has steadily increased and now represents 96 percent of total forest land. Growing-stock volume on timberland has risen to an estimated 6.8 billion ft3. Ten percent of live-tree volume on timberland is in cull trees. Live-tree aboveground biomass is 210.5 million dry tons. Net growth of growing stock increased by an average of 327 million ft3/yr. Growing stock was removed at an average of 60.6 million ft3/yr. Average annual mortality of growing stock was 86.6 million ft3/yr. Oak wilt, gypsy moth, emerald ash borer, Dutch elm disease, Asian longhorned beetle, and drought were among Illinois' forest health concerns.

Historically, the Northern Research Station's Forest Inventory and Analysis program conducted inventories of a state's forest on a periodic basis. In Illinois, periodic inventories were completed in 1948, 1962, 1985, and 1998 (Essex and Gansner 1965, Raile and Leatherberry 1988, Schmidt et al. 2000, Central States Forest Experiment Station 1949).

This publication presents the results of the most recent five annual panels (2001- 2005) of Indiana's forest resources. Since 2003, total forest land area has increased by approximately 175,000 acres. As in every inventory since 1950, the oak/hickory type is the largest forest type on the landscape, making up more than 58 percent of all forested land. Softwoods make up approximately 3 percent of Indiana's forested acreage. The net volume of growing stock on timberland totaled 8.2 billion cubic feet in 2005, more than triple the 2.5 billion cubic feet estimated during the 1950 inventory. The invasive tree species tree-of-heaven continues to threaten forest health, averaging at least one tree for every acre of Indiana's forest land.

The annual forest inventory of Wisconsin continues, and this document reports 2001-05 moving averages for most variables and comparisons between 2000 and 2005 for growth, removals, and mortality. Other resource tables can be generated through the Forest Inventory Mapmaker website at http: //ncrs2.fs.fed.us/4801/fiadb/index.htm. Estimates from this inventory show a total of 16.1 million acres of forest land in the State. The estimate of total net volume of all-live trees on forest land is 22.3 billion cubic feet (ft3). In Wisconsin, timberland area totals 15.9 million acres, and net growing-stock volume on timberland is 20.0 billion ft3. All-live, aboveground tree biomass on timberland is estimated at 597 million dry tons. Between 2000 and 2005, the average annual net growth of growing stock on timberland was 605.7 million ft3 per year. Average annual removals of growing stock totaled 362.5 million ft3 per year. Mortality was 176.4 million ft3 per year. These estimates generally show a healthy, growing forest despite more than 222,000 acres of forest that were defoliated by the jack pine budworm in 2005

"The second full annual inventory of Illinois’ forests, completed in 2010, reports more than 4.8 million acres of forest land and 97 tree species. Forest land is dominated by oak/hickory and elm/ash/cottonwood forest-type groups, which occupy 93 percent of total forest land area. The volume of growing stock on timberland totals 7.2 billion cubic feet. The average annual net growth of growing stock from 2001-2005 to 2006-2010 averages 215.1 million cubic feet per year. This report includes additional information on forest attributes, land-use change, carbon, timber products, and forest health. The included DVD contains 1) descriptive information on methods, statistics, and quality assurance of data collection, 2) a glossary of terms, 3) tables that summarize quality assurance, 4) a core set of tabular estimates for a variety of forest resources, and 5) a Microsoft Access database that represents an archive of data used in this report, with tools that allow users to produce customized estimates."--Abstract.
