This ebook contextualizes autoethnographic film in its appropriation of an epistemics of subjectivity. This is analyzed in terms of autoethnographic film’s methodological appropriation in systematic fourfold discourse construction relational to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Such discourse is constituted through autoethnographer-as-filmmaker participant-observer praxis of a “self-as-Other” identity-construct, the positionality and performativity of which enacts a progressive destabilization, deconstruction, reconstruction and self-actualization structural modeling of subjectivity epistemics through which to meta-textually engage the spectator. Autoethnographic film’s split from ethnographic film is correspondingly examined in deference to the central question of the representation of self-as-Other interpretivist phenomenology through montagist cinematic aesthetics which locate such praxis within a mimetic social reality the delimiters of which inform identity construct formation as context-specific variables. Examples are given from selected key ethnographic and autoethnographic film texts chronicling the still-evolving progression of ethnographic film into autoethnographic film as a specifically post-modern genre.

Identity has become a central feature of national conversations: identity politics and identity crises are the order of the day. We celebrate identity when it comes to personal freedom and group membership, and we fear the power of identity when it comes to discrimination, bias, and hate crimes. Drawing on Isaiah Berlin's famous distinction between positive and negative liberty, Theodor Adorno and the Century of Negative Identity argues for the necessity of acknowledging a dialectic within the identity concept. Exploring the intellectual history of identity as a social idea, Eric Oberle shows the philosophical importance of identity's origins in American exile from Hitler's fascism. Positive identity was first proposed by Frankfurt School member Erich Fromm, while negative identity was almost immediately put forth as a counter-concept by Fromm's colleague, Theodor Adorno. Oberle explains why, in the context of the racism, authoritarianism, and the hard-right agitation of the 1940s, the invention of a positive concept of identity required a theory of negative identity. This thesis uses relational dialectics theory (RDT) to make sense of the experiences of millennial mothers. RDT is a heuristic theory of relational meaning making and asserts that relationships and identities are negotiated in states of competing and contradictory discourses. This thesis can be conceptualized as two projects: autoethnography and qualitative inquiry using semi-structured interviews. Autoethnography explores the researcher’s own experience with the topic. Interview participants were asked a series of questions about their lives as millennial mothers to identify competing discourses, management strategies, and implications for identity. Three primary tensions were identified of millennial vs. mother, authenticity vs. persona, and connectedness vs. autonomy. The management strategies and identity implications fall in line with each dialectical tension. This research indicates that motherhood is a contradiction with millennial, so conclusions reveal a variety of balancing and sense-making acts to discern experiences as a millennial mother.
