This book presents the applications of future technologies to overcome the toughest humanitarian challenges from an engineering approach. COVID-19, a worldwide pandemic, has limited many physical operational areas and at the same time has motivated to uplift the initiative to digitalize the world. Society is facing ever more intense and protracted humanitarian crises, and as a result, the global community is pressed to find new ways to help people and communities in need. This interdisciplinary book highlights the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences gained while developing and testing elements of technology enhanced learning experiences with the help of emerging technologies like IT/ICT, AI, ML, edge computing, robotics automation, 5G for the betterment of humanity. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones for management of crops, livestock, fisheries, forests and other natural resource-based activities represents a new technological frontier and opens up a range of exciting opportunities. The latest issue of ICT Update is dedicated to the use of this technology and associated systems in different parts of the world. This issue - available online and in print format in both English and French has been published in collaboration with Esri. It includes 12 articles, one interview and a section featuring selected online resources on the topic. Articles range from the use of UAVs to design an irrigation scheme in Nigeria, to feeding a locust monitoring scheme, from documenting illegal land occupancy in Panama to assisting smallholder farmers in monitoring their crops in Eastern Africa, and more.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the IFIP WG 8.6 International Working Conference "ICT Unbounded, Social Impact of Bright ICT Adoption" on Transfer and Diffusion of IT, TDIT 2019, held in Accra, Ghana, in June 2019. The 30 revised full papers and 4 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 72 submissions. The papers focus on Bright Information and Communication Technology, a concept that entails the development of relevant technologies, business models, public policies, social norms, international agreements, metrics of measuring national progress and preventing undesirable activities on the Internet.
