Schematron is a validation language that checks XML documents against business rules. It extends the validation provided by languages such as Document Type Definitions (DTD), W3C XML Schema, and RELAX NG, giving you the ability to check your XML documents for compliance with rules that can be difficult, if not impossible, to check with the other validation languages. Schematron: A language for validating XML is aimed at programmers and others who process XML. It explains the language in detail along with many examples. Anyone who uses Schematron or who would like to begin using it will find a wealth of information in this book.

Netprov is an emerging interdisciplinary digital art form that offers a literature-based “show” of insightful, healing satire that is as deep as the novels of the past. This accessible history of Netprov emerges out of an ongoing conversation about the changing roles and power dynamics of author and reader in an age of real-time interactivity. Rob Wittig describes a literary genre in which all the world is a platform and all participants are players. Beyond serving as a history of the genre, this book includes tips and examples to help those new to the genre teach and create netprovs. “Jargon-free and ambitious in scope, Netprov meets the needs of several types of readers. Casual readers will be met with straightforward and easy-to-follow definitions and examples. Scholars will find deep wells of in- formation about networked roleplay games. Teachers and students will find instructions for how-to play, and a ready-made academic context to make their play meaningful and memorable.” —Kathi Inman Berens, Portland State University

I am pleased to introduce this publication based on one of the deliverables of the NO PROBLEMS project. This is one of the projects co-financed by the European Commission in the framework of the TEN-Telecom programme. Electronic commerce is high up on the agenda of the European Commission and is one of the priorities of the TEN-Telecom programme. Electronic commerce requires a reliable and secure communications environment. But in order to attract the large number of Europe's SMEs and the European citizens, electronic commerce support services must be widely accessible at low cost. The NO PROBLEMS project has addressed these challenging requirements by combining two complementary technologies: X.400 messaging for the reliability and the security framework, Internet for the low cost accessibility. NO PROBLEMS is in many regards illustrative of the TEN-Telecom objectives: it combines available technology to provide innovative services to Europe's SMEs. This publication provides an in-depth insight into some of the key technologies expected to playa major role in the support of electronic commerce. Robert Verrue Director General DG XIII European Commission This publication is based on documents of the NO PROBLEMS project, which has been founded by the European Commission DG XIII. The project partners have been INFONOVA GmbH and DATAKOM Austria from Austria as well as ITK Telekommunikation from Germany and ATLANTIDE from France.

This work opens with an accessible introduction to computer networks, providing general definitions of commonly used terms in networking. This is followed by a detailed description of the OSI model, including the concepts of connection-oriented and connectionless communications. The text carefully elaborates the specific functions of each layer, along with what is expected of protocols operating at each layer. Next, the journey of a single packet, from source to destination, is described in detail. The final chapter is devoted to the TCP/IP model, beginning with a discussion of IP protocols and the supporting ARP, RARP and In ARP protocols. The work also discusses the TCP and UDP protocols operating at the transport layer and the application layer protocols HTTP, DNS, FTP, TFTP, SMTP, POP3 and Telnet. Important facts and definitions are highlighted in gray boxes found throughout the text.
