Nikolai Gogol's short story is a sublime work of tragi-comedy. In it, he brilliantly ridicules the Ukrainian passion for litigation and reveals life as something really rather absurd. Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich are the greatest of friends-until the day they begin a foolish quarrel that culminates in that very worst of insults: "And you, Ivan Ivanovich, are a goose." From that moment on, not another word is spoken between them as they choose instead to fight out their differences in the courts. But it seems theirs is a lawsuit that is set to run for years and years.

How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Formatted for e-reader Illustrated About How the Two Ivans Quarrelled by Nikolai Gogol How the Two Ivans Quarrelled, is an amusing portrayal of two exceptionally close friends, the mortal insult that drives them apart, and the ensuing chaos that occurs. This is Gogol's humour at its best, where the most irrelevant-seeming details and turns of phrase suddenly take on a bizarre life of their own. The second story, Ivan Krylov's Panegyric in Memory of My Grandfather, has an ingenuous narrator praise the nobility and modesty of a landowner whose actions prove him to be otherwise. The final two stories, by the Russian satirist Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, are satirical attacks on the inability of civil servants to cope with real life, and on Russia's autocracy. Together, they represent some of Russia's finest comic writing before the twentieth century.

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809-1852) is by far the most enigmatic, unexpected, contradictory, and mystical writer representing classic Russian literature. His stories are unforgettably colored with Ukrainian romance and include uncanny dissections of the realities of St. Petersburg under Tsarist Russia. The ethnographic realities are described with almost scientific precision while incorporating those inexplicable, fantasy, elements that define his works as Magical Realism. Some stories feature witches, sorcerers, ghouls, mermaids, and even demons alongside quite pragmatic and cheerful Ukrainian citizenry. Others feature dull tsarist officials and crazy clerks with exaggerated and humorously complex personalities. You will be hard-pressed to find such a brilliant combination of fantastical stories, plots, and characters in another author. The true Russian soul is wide and incomprehensible. Illustrated by D. Fisher Table of Content: 1. The Viy. 2. Christmas Eve (ST. JOHN’S EVE). 3. A May Night. 4. The Cloak (The Mantle). 5. The Nose. 6. The Carriage (The Calash).

Named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889 and promptly censored by the Russian authorities. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character, Pozdnyshev, relates the events leading up to his killing his wife; in his analysis, the root cause for the deed were the "animal excesses" and "swinish connection" governing the relation between the sexes.

"The Captain's Daughter" (also known as "The Daughter of the Commandant" or "Marie: A Story of Russian Love") is regarded as Pushkin's best prose work. It was first published in 1836 in the literary journal Sovremennik. This historical novel is dedicated to the events of the Pugachev's Rebellion in Russia in 1773-1775. It tells the story of a 17-years-old officer, Peter Grineff, sent by his father into military service. Peter was assigned to a small fortress of Belogorsk, where he fell in love with Maria, the daughter of the commandant... This edition includes explanatory notes and illustrations of artists of the 18-19th centuries.
