A long time ago, many animals lived in a beautiful, green country, with trees, and plenty of food and water. But after many years, there was little food or water left. So a clever monkey, who was more powerful than the other animals, employs a porcupine to store and protect some food for him. The other animals, a hare and a mole, try to deceive the porcupine and steal the food. They try many tricks and eventually succeed. The monkey becomes very angry, and orders his workers to shoot at porcupine with bows and arrows. But instead of dying, the porcupine remains covered in spines, and is able to protect himself.

"If you could only choose one kind of life, what would you choose?" Pearson asked. "One with quills living like every other porcupine or one that's trailblazing a new path in the vast wilderness?" Mattie, the first porcupine born without any spines, is banished from her clan for being different. She's quickly picked up by the circus due to her commercial potential. At first, she loves the attention, but soon an emptiness grows deep within. That's when Pearson convinces her they belong in the wilderness instead of being enslaved under a ringmaster's control. Will her heartache finally end by escaping from the golden prison of performing, producing, and perfecting? Follow Mattie and Pearson's fantastical journey as they face their painful pasts only to discover their differences are their superpowers. The uplifting story of two unlikely mountaineers: a man in late middle age and a fearless pint-sized pup who, together, scale Colorado's highest peaks. By the time life had finished hitting Rick Crandall from all sides, he was at the lowest point of his life, both personally and professionally. Depressed to find himself facing a mid-late-life age crisis and watching his finances crumble as the tech industry bubble burst, he hopes his future isn't headed downhill. It was at this critical juncture in their new marriage that his wife Pamela made an astute and life-changing suggestion: "Let's get a dog." So begins the story of Emme, a 200-pound Saint Bernard trapped in the body of 5-pound Australian terrier puppy. Soon, Emme and Rick hit the hiking trails around Aspen, Colorado. While she is groomed to be a show dog, it's soon obvious that her heart is in the hills and with Rick, who decides to add more challenging hikes to the mix. Before long, they are scaling Colorado's "fourteeners," peaks with altitudes of over 14,000 feet. On one magical day, Emme climbs to the top of four "fourteeners," a quarter of the sixteen such peaks she will complete during her life without once being carried on a trail or on the rocks on the way to a summit. In mountaineering Rick realizes he has found—in his late sixties—his life's new passion. This is where Emme has led him—out of the abyss and to the top of the mountain. She was never really walking behind: she was nudging him along until he found his stride. Even after Rick understood the glory of climbing, it was Emme still doing the leading, until Rick learned how to lead himself.

A fascinating, richly illustrated exploration of the poignant origins of Rudyard Kipling’s world-famous children’s classic From "How the Leopard Got Its Spots" to "The Elephant’s Child," Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories have delighted readers across the world for more than a century. In this original study, John Batchelor explores the artistry with which Kipling created the Just So Stories, using each tale as an entry point into the writer’s life and work—including the tragedy that shadows much of the volume, the death of his daughter Josephine. Batchelor details the playful challenges the stories made to contemporary society. In his stories Kipling played with biblical and other stories of creation and imagined fantastical tales of animals' development and man's discovery of literacy. Richly illustrated with original drawings and family photographs, this account reveals Kipling’s public and private lives—and sheds new light on a much-loved and tremendously influential classic.
