As the founders of the US republic make clear in the Declaration of Independence, human beings have an unassailable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While the meaning of these “unalienable rights” is debated, it is clear that these rights are interrelated. Concerned with these “rights,” Holistic Happiness focuses on happiness, defining the purpose of life as achieving and maintaining happiness “conducive to the equitable flourishing of all.” To this end, happiness should not be confused with pleasure, which is momentary and transitory, for happiness is not so much a feeling as an attitude, associated with what we call achieving meaning and purpose in life. Properly understood, happiness can be achieved, but only by inner discipline, requiring a transformation of one’s outlook, attitude, and approach to life. As this book emphasizes, good health is an important foundation for happiness. However, to experience and maintain good health requires good genes, a balanced lifestyle, supportive companions, wholesome eating and drinking, regular exercise, a positive mindset, an active disposition, and good fortune. While happiness and good health are frequently disrupted by accidents, disease, stress, chemical and emotional imbalance, and numerous other factors, wellness is achievable and sustainable, but it needs balanced input from an individual’s four constituent dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In this regard, this volume is a resource for individuals seeking holistic happiness. While benefitting from recent scholarly research, Holistic Happiness is unique in content and conception and is useful for individual or group study. Each chapter concludes with questions suitable for discussion or reflection.

Exploring age-old beauty and well-being traditions as well as the latest scientific findings on skin cells, this book--and the products and treatments it recommends--is the result of 15 years of research and experience. Jean-Louis Poiroux, founder of Cinq Mondes Spas, describes how the subtle interactions between body, mind, and skin can create a state of perfect equilibrium--and a feeling of outer and inner happiness, down to our very cells--or a state of imbalance, caused by unsuitable foods, stress, and cosmetics containing industrial byproducts and other chemicals. Drawing on the ancient teachings of Ayurveda and incorporating yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation as well as the natural active ingredients and micronutrients found in raw foods, super fruits, and vegetable super oils, he teaches you how to become happier, both inside and out.

The Routledge Handbook of Media Use and Well-Being serves as the first international review of the current state of this fast-developing area of research. The volume provides a multifaceted perspective on the beneficial as well as the detrimental effects of media exposure on psychological health and well-being. As a "first-mover," it will define the field of media use and well-being and provide an essential resource for research and teaching in this area. The volume is structured along four central considerations: Processes presents concepts that provide a theoretical bridge between media use and well-being, such as psychological need satisfaction, recovery from stress and strain, self-presentation and self-enhancement, or parasocial interactions with media characters, providing a comprehensive understanding of the underlying processes that drive psychological health and well-being through media. Moderators examines both risk factors that promote negative effects on well-being and protective factors that foster positive media effects. Contexts bridges the gap between theory and "real life" by illustrating how media use can influence well-being and satisfaction in very different life domains, covering the full spectrum of everyday life by addressing the public, private, and work spheres. Audiences takes a look at the influence of life phases and life situations on the interplay of media use and well-being, questioning whether various user groups differ with regard to the effects of media exposure. Bringing together the expertise of outstanding international scholars from multiple disciplines, including communication, media psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, and media education, this handbook sheds new light on the role of media in influencing and affecting emotions.

"This is what a philosophy book should be like-exciting, surprising, mind-opening, honest, and original." -Alphonso Lingis, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Pennsylvania State University Thinking as Sport and Dance will not only teach that real thinking is an amazing adventure into the greatest mysteries and experiences of life but will also reveal thinking as a grand celebration of life. To know the real glory of thinking, you must understand its two basic dimensions: the qualities that make it similar to sports and those that relate it to dance. Artful thinking is like a sport because it's goal-oriented, analytical, rule-bound, and confrontational. Besides pursuing knowledge with the attitude of a dedicated sportsperson, artful thinkers also engage reality in the spirit of dance, where thinking becomes spontaneous, intuitive, playful, and harmonious. Thinking at its best emerges when the mind of an athlete and that of a dancer live together competitively and playfully in the same mind. When this happens, beautiful thought performances result. Thinking as Sport and Dance is a critical tool for addressing and resolving life's many complexities, as well as a guide to embracing life with gusto and joy.
