There were two organizations which we know about: the Female Mite Society and the Woman's Working Society, which preceded the original organization of Woman's Missionary Union. In the period between 1827 and 1838, the Woman's Working Society was organized under the leadership of Mrs. Sarah Stone, the widow of David Stone, a banker, and the only son of Governor David Stone. It was at this time that women began to assume a more prominent place in the church. Mrs. Stone later became Mrs. Alfred Williams and continued in a leadership role.
