He was, unhappily, able to complete very little of the projected fourth volume, and the chapter now printed is the only part of it in a sufficiently advanced state for publication. In printing it a few verbal alterations have been made where some slight change or correction seemed necessary, but with these exceptions Mr. Gardiner's manuscript has been faithfully followed.
