Stone walls de fended the whole precinct, pierced by handsome gates, one of which was in King Street, one near New Palace Yard, one opening on Tothill Street,1 and one in College Street where stood the abbey mill. Bridges crossed the brooks, and are said to exist still, but far beneath the present streets, for Thorney has been raised about nine feet, on the average, above its ancient level. Excerpt from London and the Kingdom, Vol. 2 of 3: A History Derived Mainly From the Archives at Guildhall in the Custody of the Corporation of the City of London Crown, and would preserve the city of London, the king's Chamber, against every enemy at home or abroad. He was invited to notify his wishes to them through their secretary or remembrancer, Mr. Doctor Fletcher, whom they sent as their Special messenger.1 The king returned for answer, that although he had been already aware of the City's forwardness in joining with the nobility in proclaiming him rightful successor to the crown, he was pleased to learn from their trusty messenger that the citizens had advocated his cause not only from the conscious ness of its being a just one, but also because they were assured of his zeal for the preservation of religion.2 This was one Of James's mystifying remarks which he was accustomed to throw out in order to raise the hopes of the Catholics, who questioned his title to the crown, whilst affording no cause for alarm or discontent among the Protestants. Excerpt from The Tower of London, Vol. 2 of 2 Owing to the plague then raging in London, the customary procession at the coronation was omitted, although the King rode in state from the Tower to Westminster, preparatory to the Opening of his first Parliament on 1sth Of March 1605, as the Londoners had made their welcome for him ready. In Mr Sidney Lee's Life of Shakespeare, he states that Shakespeare, with eight other players of the King's company of actors, walked from the Tower of London to Westminster in the procession which accompanied the King in his formal entry into London. Each actor received four and a half yards of scarlet cloth to wear as a cloak on the occasion, and in the document authorising the grant, Shakespeare's name stands first on the list. This is the only time that we can positively know that Shakespeare was ever at the Tower; but his frequent introduction Of the fortress into his historical dramas makes it certain that he must often have visited a place so full of dramatic episodes and historical memories.
