The 27th Iowa Infantry was organized under the proclamation of President Lincoln dated July 2, 1862 at Dubuque, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on October 3, 1862. The Regiment was in the Army's newly formed Department of the Northwest commanded Major General John Pope at Fort Snelling. Battle casualties in the regiment were relatively light, but the 27th lost 20% of their men to disease.
