The wizard works alone. She was his one exception. Before Master Kitable appeared in Galanth at the age of thirteen, he’d been a complete unknown. Even twenty years later, he is still only “Master Kitable,” a man without a last name, a wizard without history. He operated in the shadows for the Prince of Galanth when the borders were drawn, then helped the legendary King Tohmas take over Espar. Now, he enforces their tentative unity by policing wizard magic across the kingdom. His offer to take Shimmer Weaver on as an apprentice after the war was unprecedented. She doesn’t fit in the new structure of government; she’s a dancer, an apothecary, and a free spirit at odds with their regimented world. But she’s also brilliant, and after two years, Kitable has to accept that her apprenticeship is ending. There’s only one more mission: a run-of-the-mill investigation of some minor magical issues in an unremarkable corner of Espar. Only this time, the enemy is Kitable’s past hunting him down, seeking to destroy everything he has built, including that which he values most: Shimmer’s loyalty.

In this interdisciplinary collaboration, an international group of scholars have come together to suggest new directions for the study of the family in Scotland circa 1300-1750. Contributors apply tools from across a range of disciplines including art history, literature, music, gender studies, anthropology, history and religious studies to assess creatively the broad range of sources which inform our understanding of the pre-modern Scottish family. A central purpose of this volume is to encourage further studies in this area by highlighting the types of sources available, as well as actively engaging in broader historiographical debates to demonstrate how important and effective family studies are to advancing our understanding of the past. Articles in the first section demonstrate the richness and variety of sources that exist for studies of the Scottish family. These essays clearly highlight the uniqueness, feasibility and value of family studies for pre-industrial Scotland. The second and third sections expand upon the arguments made in part one to demonstrate the importance of family studies for engaging in broader historiographical issues. The focus of section two is internal to the family. These articles assess specific family roles and how they interact with broader social forces/issues. In the final section the authors explore issues of kinship ties (an issue particularly associated with popular images of Scotland) to examine how family networks are used as a vehicle for social organization.

In The Mysterious Story of God, he reveals secrets of God and breaks the code embedded in the Bible, the Bhagavat Gita, Hindu Puranas, and other religious, political, and pop culture texts and occurrences. Through the years, he’s been in touch with top world leaders and corporate titans and is privy to exhilarating truths and revelations, which he shares. He divulges who the covert agencies of the United States and other countries have concluded is the final avatar of God on Earth. Sastry reminds all that the mystery of God is like a complex puzzle, using codes only one person in the history of time and humanity, with the key to the scroll, can solve completely.

This spellbinding story introduces the unforgettable seventeen-year-old narrator, Luke Prescott, who has been brought up in a bohemian matriarchy by his divorced New Age mother, a religious grandmother, and two precocious half-sisters. Having spent a short lifetime swinging agreeably between the poles of Eastern mysticism and New England Puritanism, Luke is fascinated by the new fields of brain science and believes in having evidence for his beliefs. “Without evidence,” he declares, “you just have hope, which is nice, but not reliable.” Luke is writing his college applications when his father—a famous television star whom he never knew—calls and invites him to Los Angeles for the summer. Luke accepts and is plunged into a world of location shooting, celebrity interviews, glamorous parties, and premieres. As he begins to know the difference between his father’s public persona and his private one, Luke finds himself sorting through his own personal mythology. By the end of the summer Luke thinks he has found the answers he’s been seeking, only to discover that the differences between truth and belief are not always easy to spot, and that evidence can be withheld: when Luke returns home, his mother reveals something she knows will change everything for him. With Blind Sight, Meg Howrey gives us a smart, funny, and deeply moving story about truth versus belief, about what we do and don’t tell ourselves—with the result, as Luke says, that we don’t always know what we know.
