Throughout the Nepal Himalaya socio-economic changes are transforming the lives of remote agropastoral peoples, bringing them into new relationships with once-distant elities. This book is a comprehensive study of the cultural ecology, demography, and domestic organization of one village undergoing these changes. The Tamang community of Timling faced for the first time with an inability to procure most subsistence needs from their local environment. These Tamang have joined the flow of people from rural Nepal who compete for wage labor to supplement their household economies. These changes are profoundly altering internal village relationships which are organized by both marriage and an ethic of reciprocity.

This collection addresses the world-wide pattern of falling birth rates. Fertility has commonly been treated from a specialized demographic perspective, but there is today widespread dissatisfaction with conventional demographic approaches, which are criticized for neglecting the cultural, social, and political forces that affect reproductive behavior. For their part, anthropologists have only recently begun to apply their characteristic approaches to the study of reproduction. Drawing on new ethnographic and historical research and on a variety of theoretical approaches, the contributors to this book indicate some of the ways in which demography might take into account historical processes, political forces, and cultural conceptions.

This collection of essays by prominent lawyers, theologians, social scientists, policy makers, and activists examines the reasons why the once treasured institution of marriage has been steadily displaced by a culture of divorce and unwed parenthood. Promises to Keep presents the full text of The Council on Families in America's 1995 investigation, Marriage in America: A Report to the Nation, and the contributors provide suggestions for marital resurrection to counteract trends that have created tragic hardships for children, generated poverty within families, and burdened us with insupportable social costs. Sponsored by The Institute for American Values.
