This book deals with the properties and behavior of carbon at high temperatures. It presents new methods and new ways to obtain the liquid phase of carbon. Melting of graphite and the properties of liquid carbon are presented under stationary heat and pulse methods. Metal like properties of molten graphite at high initial density are indicated. A new possible transition of liquid carbon from metal to nonmetal behavior much above the melting point is mentioned. Methodical questions of pulse heating, in particular the role of pinch-pressure in receiving a liquid state of carbon, are discussed. The reader finds evidence about the necessity of applying high pressure (higher than 100 bar) to melt graphite (melting temperature 4800±100 K). The reader can verify the advantage of volume pulse electrical heating before surface laser heating to study the physical properties of carbon, including enthalpy, heat capacity, electrical resistivity and temperature. The advantages of fast heating of graphite by pulsed electric current during a few microseconds are shown. The data obtained for the heat capacity of liquid carbon under constant pressure and constant volume were used to estimate the behavior at temperatures much higher 5000 K.

This book presents a summary of high-pressure phase transitions of minerals and related inorganic compounds. The first part reviews the methods to investigate phase transitions by direct high-pressure and high-temperature experiments together with thermodynamic approaches that consist of calorimetric measurements and thermodynamic calculation. In the second part, phase relations and thermodynamic properties of olivine, pyroxene, garnet, spinel, perovskite, rutile, and related inorganic compounds with A2BO4, ABO3, AB2O4, and AO2 stoichiometries are described. Volume 2 considers the essential conditions for a model to be truly predictive. The authors use a statistical approach to rate the validity of the various predictive models that have been previously used for evaluating various thermophysical properties. On the basis of this assessment, the authors have predicted values for the thermophysical properties of elemental metallic liquids, which are lacking in experimental data. They believe their predicted values are at least as reliable, and sometimes more reliable than corresponding experimental values. According to the periodic law, the authors provide the periodic variations in values of some twelve physical quantities or thermophysical properties. This is based on the electron configuration in the outermost energy level of metallic elements. Finally, a large number of experimental data for the physical quantities and thermophysical properties of liquid metallic elements are compiled.
