In recent years, there has been a major expansion of high pressure research providing unique information about systems of interest to a wide range of scientific disciplines. Since nuclear magnetic resonance has been applied to a wide spec trum of problems in chemistry, physics and biochemistry, it is not surprising to find that high pressure NMR techniques have also had many applications in these fields of science. Clearly, the high information content of NMR experiments combined with high pressure provides a powerful tool in modern chem istry. It is the aim of this monograph, in the series on NMR Basic Principles and Progress, to illustrate the wide range of prob lems which can be successfully studied by high pressure NMR. Indeed, the various contributions in this volume discuss studies of interest to physics, chemical physics, biochemistry, and chemical reaction kinetics. In many different ways, this monograph demonstrates the power of modern experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate very complex systems. The first contribution, by D. Brinkman, deals with NMR and NQR studies of superionic conductors and high-Tc supercon ductors at high pressure. Pressure effects on phase transitions, detection of new phases, and pressure effects on diffusion and spin-lattice relaxation, represent a few of the topics discussed in this contribution of particular interest to solid state physics.

High-Pressure Chemistry and Physics of Polymers is devoted to covering all areas of high-pressure polymer materials science. Topics addressed include the synthesis of polymers, changes in reactivity, structural transformations, molecular dynamics, relaxation processes, deformational properties, chemical modification, and the effect of shock waves and shear stresses. The authors' contributions reflect over 60 years of Soviet study in the field of physico-chemistry conducted at the major former Soviet Institutes of Chemical Physics, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. Fundamental topics such as compressibility of polymers, polymerization under pressure, viscoelastic/deformational properties, and polymer modification are discussed with an eye toward materials development for improving physical models and methods of calculating the changing parameters of materials under pressure. The book is a valuable reference to data on mechanisms of physical and chemical processes, in addition to new experimental data for improving physical models and methods of calculating changes in material characteristics under compression loads. High-Pressure Chemistry and Physics of Polymers will be an important reference for graduate students and practicing professionals in polymer chemistry and polymeric materials.

Solid-State NMR is a branch of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance which is presently experiencing a phase of strongly increasing popularity. The most striking evidence is the large number of contributions from Solid-State Resonance at NMR meetings, approaching that ofliquid state resonance. Important progress can be observed in the areas of methodological developments and applications to organic and inorganic matter. One volume devoted to more or less one of each of these areas has been published in the preceding three issues. This volume can be considered an addendum to this series. Selected methods and applications of Solid-State NMR are featured in three chapters. The first one treats the recoupling of dipolar interactions in solids, which are averaged by fast sample rotation. Following an introduction to effective Hamiltonians and Floquet theory, different types of experiment such as rotary resonance, dipolar chemical shift correlation spectroscopy, rotational resonance and multipulse recoupling are treated in the powerful Floquet formalism. In the second chapter, the different approaches to line narrowing of quadrupolar nuclei are reviewed in a. consistent formulation of double resonance (DaR) and dynamic angle spinning (DAS). Practical aspects of probe design are considered as well as advanced 2D experiments, sensitivity enhancement techniques, and spinning sideband manipulations. The use of such techniques dramatically increases the number of nuclei which can be probed in high resolution NMR spectroscopy. The final chapter describes new experimental approaches and results of structural studies of noncrystalline solids.

In the time since this book was written, the application of NMR in the study of polymers has continued to develop rapidly. The main trends of the work have remained as before, namely, the study of the structure of polymers, molecular motion in them, and chemical conversions of high-molecular-weight substances. How ever, as a result of the refinement of experimental techniques and development of the theory, new progress has been achieved, par ticularly in the NMR spectroscopy of polymer solutions. We therefore decided that it was worthwhile to provide an ad ditionallist of literature, covering papers published in 1965, 1966, and the beginning of 1967. By using the bibliographic directory appended to the list, the reader can readily find references to the latest literature for all sections of the book. I. Ya. Slonim A. N. Lyubimov v Preface to the Russian Edition The aim of this book is mainly to answer the questions which inevitably arise for a chemist who wishes to use NMR in his work on polymers.

The role of high pressure experiments in the discovery of supercon ducting materials with a T. above liquid nitrogen temperature has demon strated the importance of such experiments. The same role holds true in the tailoring of materials for optoelectronic devices. In addition, much progress has been made recently in the search for metallic hydro gen, and the application of high pressure in polymer research has brought forth interesting results. These facts together with the suc cess of previous small size meetings (such as the "First International Conference on the Physics of Solids at High Pressure", held in 1965 in Tucson, Arizona, U. S. A. ; "High Pressure and Low Temperature Physics", held in 1977 in Cleveland, Ohio, U. S. A. ; and "Physics of Solids Under High Pressure", held in 1981 in bad Honnef, Germany), motivated us to organize a workshop with emphasis on the newest results and trends in these fields of high pressure research. Furthermore, it was intended to mix experienced and young scien tists to realize an idea best expressed in a letter by Prof. Weinstein: "I think it is an excellent idea. I have often felt that the number of excellent young researchers in the high pressure field need an opportu nity to put forward their work with due recognition. " Thanks to the support of the key speakers, we were able to achieve this goal and had more than 50\ young participants.

Vibrational Spectroscopy at High External Pressures: The Diamond Anvil Cell presents the effects of high pressure on the vibrational properties of materials as accomplished in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). The DAC serves the dual purpose of generating the pressures and being transparent to infrared radiation, allowing the observation of changes caused by pressure. The optical probes highlighted will deal principally with infrared and Raman scattering, although some observations in the visible region will also be presented. The book begins with a discussion of the effects of pressure and pressure units. This is followed by separate chapters on the instrumentation needed to study vibrational transitions under pressure and pressure calibration and various methods used to measure pressure in the DAC. Subsequent chapters deal with applications in basic areas of inorganic, coordination, and organic compounds. These include the effects of pressure on spin states and various geometries; pressure effects on organic molecules; applications in geochemistry, conductors, forensic science, and lubricants; and miscellaneous topics such as metallic hydrogen, metallic xenon, and CuCl.
