Adds that Mr. [James] Webber is a very honorable man, and explains how generous he was in caring for Knox's brother William during William's illness in London.

The firm of Broome & Platt, which owes Henry Knox money (see GLC02437.03182), explains its problems with various creditors and the ways in which they are in debt. According to the writer (perhaps Samuel Broome, as he refers to Mr. Platt in the letter), they are suffering from ill treatment by their former creditors in England, due to the war. They are hoping to avoid bankruptcy and hoping they will be able to work out with all their creditors a similar arrangement to the one Samuel Shaw negotiated with them, on behalf of Henry Knox. Reaffirm their commitment to justice in their dealings with their creditors and appreciate the politeness of Henry Knox during these negotiations.

Writes that the firm would have complied with Knox's wishes relating to the settling of their debt had it been Practicable & prudent. However, it would have been ruinous to do so because they do not know the original cost of all their goods, and for a variety of other reasons. Declares that Samuel Shaw carries with him most all the Woolens, which are by far the most salable at this season of the year, and will also bring Knox a receipt which they would like him to sign in order to prevent very Possible risk and Inconvenience on your part.

Written and signed for Knox in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's former aide-de-camp. Writes that Mr. James Webber, who is a close friend of his brother William Knox and had taken care of William while in London, has enclosed to him a note from Broome and Platt drawn on Warburton and Randall of London, who have become bankrupt. Needs to receive payment from them, so is sending his good friend Samuel Shaw to meet with them. Asks that they either provide payment with interest, or arrange with Shaw to pay it back in a short time. Writes that he does not like to be in this position, especially given his respect for Broome and Platt, and assures them that aside from himself and Shaw, no one knows about this situation and they plan to maintain confidentiality.
