Unsigned, but content and docket suggest the author is Henry Knox. Written from Montpelier, Knox's home in Thomaston, Maine. Received his last letter as well as the money enclosed. Discusses his future financial prospects. Thanks Jackson for his offer to help Knox pay off any and all of his debts. Believes he will be able to have financial security in his old age. Discusses shipping and trade interests in Europe and India, relating to his attempts to sell lumber abroad. Mentions that he owes money to his carpenter, Mr. [Ebenezer] Dunton.

Discusses recent correspondence between himself and Knox, recently appointed Secretary at War. Discusses business and financial matters pertaining to Knox (apparently, Jackson was managing Knox's affairs while Knox was in New York).

Reports that the bank scripts have been forwarded. Believes he took advantage of the high prices they were bringing and sold them. Says he made prospects this day for the purchase of the other million, but I think they will not sell, or will ask much higher than ten Cents. Wants to know the highest price he'll go. Tells him General David Cobb will not accept the marshallcy because it would not give him salt for his family. Says that the office offered to General David Brooks is not lucrative enough to support a family.

Asks Knox about his upcoming visit to New York. Discusses his poor financial situation, particularly that he is having difficulty paying off debts. Updates Knox on their joint business ventures. Mentions their project to have Madame de Leval organize a French settlement in some of their lands in Maine. Writes, Madame Laval sail'd on Friday for Frenchmans Bay. She appeared very much displeased with the general management of the business, and at one time was on the point of returning to New York... she kept constantly in view her fears with respect to our obtaining a Title of the lands from the government, and her mind would never be easy until we had made the first payment. Discusses his own possible travels to New York or Philadelphia. Touches on a bill recently presented by [David] Cobb.
