"This is the colorful and dramatic biography of two of America's most controversial entrepreneurs: Moses Louis Annenberg, 'the racing wire king, ' who built his fortune in racketeering, invested it in publishing, and lost much of it in the biggest tax evasion case in United States history; and his son, Walter, launcher of TV Guide and Seventeen magazines and former ambassador to Great Britain."--Jacket.

This book describes the most important kinds of texts in English and introduces the methodological techniques used to analyse them. Three analytical approaches are introduced and compared, describing a wide range of texts from the perspectives of register, genre and style. The primary focus of the book is on the analysis of registers. Part 1 introduces an analytical framework for studying registers, genre conventions, and styles. Part 2 provides detailed descriptions of particular text varieties in English, including spoken interpersonal varieties (conversation, university office hours, service encounters), written varieties (newspapers, academic prose, fiction), and emerging electronic varieties (e-mail, internet forums, text messages). Finally, Part 3 introduces advanced analytical approaches using corpora, and discusses theoretical concerns, such as the place of register studies in linguistics, and practical applications of register analysis. Each chapter ends with three types of activities: reflection and review activities, analysis activities, and larger project ideas.

English is used in diplomatic contexts worldwide, including in situations where none of the interlocutors are native-speakers. This ground-breaking volume brings together the perspectives of researchers and practitioners to discuss the needs of those using and learning English for Diplomatic Purposes. Chapter authors use concepts from sociolinguistics, World Englishes, Peace Linguistics and English as a Lingua Franca. Combined with this theoretical background is a pragmatic understanding of the work of diplomacy and the realities of communication, as well as exercises designed to help students, teachers and practicing diplomats reflect on, and develop, their language use. This book represents an important first step in the opening-up of English for Diplomatic Purposes as a distinct field of study and learning, and as such will be required reading for those working and studying in this area.

The thirty-eighth session of the Committee on Narcotic Drugs requested the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) to 'develop a glossary of terms to ensure a common understanding of terms'. This Glossary is intended to provide brief definitions of both the most relevant scientific terms in the field of drug demand reduction, including key terms employed in international treaties concerned with illicit drugs, and, the main substances of abuse, including alcohol and nicotine. It aims to support future activities and publications in demand reduction and to facilitate international communication about drug issues and policies. The list of terms included in the Glossary is not exhaustive and it is not meant to replace other key sources of information such as the World Health Organization's 1994 'Lexicon of alcohol and drug terms'. The inclusion criteria are given in the introduction. The Glossary is intended for policy makers and planners in both developing and developed countries who are engaged in demand reduction policies and programmes.
