This book engages the globally pressing question of how to live and work with the haunting power of the past in the aftermath of mass violence. It brings together a collection of interdisciplinary contributions to reflect on the haunting of post-conflict memory from the perspective of diverse country case studies including South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Northern Ireland, North and South Korea, Palestine and Israel, America and Australia. Contributions offer theoretical, empirical and practical insights on the nature of historical trauma and practices of collective healing and repair that include embodied, artistic and culturally relevant forms of wisdom for dealing with the past. While this question has traditionally been explored through the lens of trauma studies in relation to the post-Holocaust experience, this book provides new understandings from a variety of different historical contexts and disciplinary perspectives. Its chapters draw on, challenge and expand the trauma concept to propose more contextually relevant frameworks for transforming haunted memory in the aftermath of historical trauma.

Healing Haunted Histories tackles the oldest and deepest injustices on the North American continent. Violations which inhabit every intersection of settler and Indigenous worlds, past and present. Wounds inextricably woven into the fabric of our personal and political lives. And it argues we can heal those wounds through the inward and outward journey of decolonization. The authors write as, and for, settlers on this journey, exploring the places, peoples, and spirits that have formed (and deformed) us. They look at issues of Indigenous justice and settler “response-ability” through the lens of Elaine’s Mennonite family narrative, tracing Landlines, Bloodlines, and Songlines like a braided river. From Ukrainian steppes to Canadian prairies to California chaparral, they examine her forebearers’ immigrant travails and trauma, settler unknowing and complicity, and traditions of resilience and conscience. And they invite readers to do the same. Part memoir, part social, historical, and theological analysis, and part practical workbook, this process invites settler Christians (and other people of faith) into a discipleship of decolonization. How are our histories, landscapes, and communities haunted by continuing Indigenous dispossession? How do we transform our colonizing self-perceptions, lifeways, and structures? And how might we practice restorative solidarity with Indigenous communities today?

Gordon is a loner who wakes up penniless on a deserted railway station somewhere in Outback Australia. In a lonely cafe he spies a woman whom he recognises from many years ago - as the girl he grew up with, whom he hasn't seen in fifteen years. He discovers that Doreen has a daughter named Shirley who was taken off her by the authorities ten years ago when she and her partner were both drug addicts. They rescue Shirley from an orphanage in Sydney. She is now a 'troubled teenager'. As a means of rehabilitation, Gordon and Doreen take Shirley back to their home town of Casterson to revive some old memories and perhaps aid Shirley's healing process. In Casterson they discover some shocking things about their own families. Gordon finds that many memories of his childhood have been repressed and altered in his own mind. He come across some disturbing facts about himself, his brother, his mother and particularly his father, who he once believed was a man of impeccable values and standards. The more Gordon delves into his past the more shocking are the things he uncovers, until he begins to seriously doubt his own sanity. What follows is a hauntingly painful trip down memory lane for Gordon, where many long-held myths are exploded in his face. This is compounded by the fact that Shirley's condition becomes increasingly more serious as she experiments with drugs, self-harm and attempted suicide.
