Excerpt from Secretary's First Report: Harvard College Class of 1915 To the Members of the Class of 1915: - The following report presents a detailed account of what the class did during its four years at College. The chief value of a report such as this is that it forms the basis upon which all other records pertaining to the class must hang. It will be the source from which all comparisons will be drawn, both of the class with other classes and of the individual members of the class with other Harvard men. In addition, it will be a convenient starting point, a future reference to which will show the increased solidarity and spirit of the class, and a proof of its prophecy of success to all the members of 1915. It is hoped that these facts and figures will be an ever-ready guide which will lead the reader back to days, stirring and thrilling to some, quietly satisfying to others; but, to all, days which will be recalled with certain pleasure and sure satisfaction. Much credit is due Mr. Adolphus Terry for his "Job" like patience and zeal in collecting the data herein presented. May I express my grateful appreciation to the members of the class for their prompt and careful replies to my requests for information, and my trust that in the future I shall meet with the same consideration. Excerpt from Secretary's First Report, April, 1915: Harvard College, Class of 1914 Your Treasurer begs to submit the following report of all the receipts and expenditures of the Class Treasury from January lst, 1914, to January lst, 1915. The bank balance on January lst, 1914, has been materially increased by the pledges of members, although it is surprising what a small percentage of the class, only 65 per cent., have contributed. Another effort will be made very soon to persuade the other 35 per cent. To join in the fund and it is hoped they will cooperate quickly and generously. The amount of' money pledged for this year, still unpaid, is comparatively small, but its prompt payment would be of great assistance to the class. The expenditures of the class for the past year were rather heavy, due to the fact that the entertainments which were given during last spring were expensive and, in no case except the picnic, did they pay for themselves. The Class Day Committee was particularly successful in the management of the festivities last June and has already paid to the treasury, with the promise of another substantial sum in the near future. The Photograph Committee, which did so well with the Class Album, has repaid a good proportion of the sum lent them by the class, but their debt can be still further reduced if those who have not bought albums, would secure them from Richard D. Walker, Alpine Street, Malden, Mass, by send ing him a cheque for plus the cost of mailing. Weight of album is five pounds. Upon the advice of a number of graduates who are close ly in touch with the financial situation this year, your treasurer has deposited what money was available for invest ment in the Massachusetts Trust Company for the present, rather than follow the precedent of many previous classes who have purchased bonds and other securities. Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1900: Secretary's Fourth Report, June, 1915 With this Fourth Report I send my greetings to all the members of the Class and thank them for the time and trouble they have spent in helping me make up the volume. It is no easy or pleasant task, I realize, for a busy man to sit down and exhume dates and the exact details of his doings since we left college. The fact that such a large proportion of the Class have sent me the desired information is one in which we may all find reason for satisfaction. On examining the records in this report it is apparent that all over the country the members of the Class coming to the front in all professions and occupations. This is inter esting, but not surprising, for even when we were graduated it was evident that many of our men would win fame. The principal deduction to be drawn from the autobiographies as a whole is that our men have the happy faculty of getting results. It will be worth coming to. We shall have Hapgood to tell us what is the matter with the world; Rublee to tell us what is the matter with business; Herrick, of Chicago, to tell us what is the matter with the literary public; Her rick, of Boston, to tell us what has been the matter with the Yale crews; and Page to tell us why a poet is not with out honor except in Hanover. It will be the one chance of a lifetime to march behind a brass band, at the head of the procession, to the Stadium on Class Day, lunch with our own Chief Marshal and see him head the column in the Yard on Commencement Day. Not until we have been out of College for twenty-five years more shall we again have a chance to see a member of our Class address the multitude at the Commencement Day exercises and talk to the President and Fellows and distinguished guests as an equal. The Anniversary Fund will have been raised, to what extent we do not now commit ourselves, and received by a surprised, and we trust not disappointed, Treasurer of the College, and all our troubles will have been turned over to our immediate successor, the Class of 1891. The Secre tary will promise not to send you any more importunate messages, and for five years you can look at his stamped envelopes without a qualm.
