Barbadian folklore meets superheroes in this Afro-Caribbean fantasy adventure story—now in paperback Hardears is an Afro-Caribbean fantasy adventure graphic novel by Matthew Clarke and Nigel Lynch. The story takes place in an alternative world on Jouvert Island—a magical analog of the island of Barbados, and begins when a superstorm of unprecedented strength obliterates the island, leaving it totally defenseless. As the island reels from the devastation, Mr. Hardin, the head of the Merchant Guild, charges in and promises to rebuild the economy of the island by creating jobs in his giant corporation. However, it’s soon discovered that Hardin is a parasite and is capturing people from the island and using their life essence, or vibes,to feed his factories. Bolo, a local hero, saves his love Zahrah from Hardin and his cronies, but the lovers are then framed as rebels against the state. The state has been compromised by the factories, and the workers who know the truth about Hardin must go into hiding. If Bolo, Zahrah, and their allies don’t take down Hardin and the corrupt government, all will be lost. Together, they must find the strength of their island and ancestors to fight the evil forces that have taken over their homeland.

'They won't know you, the you that's hidden somewhere in the castle of your skin' Nine-year-old G. leads a life of quiet mischief crab catching, teasing preachers and playing among the pumpkin vines. His sleepy fishing village in 1930s Barbados is overseen by the English landlord who lives on the hill, just as their 'Little England' is watched over by the Mother Country. Yet gradually, G. finds himself awakening to the violence and injustice that lurk beneath the apparent order of things. As the world he knows begins to crumble, revealing the bruising secret at its heart, he is spurred ever closer to a life-changing decision. Lyrical and unsettling, George Lamming's autobiographical coming-of-age novel is a story of tragic innocence amid the collapse of colonial rule. 'Rich and riotous' The Times 'Its poetic imaginative writing has never been surpassed' Tribune

It’s Your Word Against Mine is a collection of stories by Sylvester Carrington that compares unique cultural words and phrases from his native Barbados with select American terms. Some of these words have a different meaning in his culture, while others are nonexistent when it comes to translation. These simple words migrated with him and he has added those he encountered when he came to live in America. The author’s engaging style of storytelling will grab readers, as he takes them on a cultural journey using a vehicle of simple words to highlight the different aspects of the two cultures he has called home. With amazing skill, he has intricately woven each cultural term and phrase into a narrative that is altogether fascinating, entertaining, educational, and at times, personal and autobiographical. Watch for the highlighted words in italics throughout the book that compare and contrast these two vastly different cultures.
