2009 marked the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations of the Republic of India and the Republic of Austria. The Conservation Department of the University of Applied Arts Vienna presents this volume largely based on papers reported at the conference "Cultural Heritage Counts - Research, Conservation and Management" held in New Delhi in August, 2009. The conference was a crucial contribution initiated by the Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi to celebrate this important jubilee. The successful and intensive cooperation of both countries in the fields of the research and conservation of cultural heritage is reflected in numerous research and conservation projects presented in this book.

How does national identity vary across time and space, how is it contested, and what has been the impact of globalization upon national identity and culture?This book examines how national identity is represented, performed, spatialized and materialized through popular culture and in everyday life. National identity is revealed to be inherent in the things we often take for granted - from landscapes and eating habits, to tourism, cinema and music. A commitment to modernity is the underlying theme of this volume. Through essays that are interpretive and theoretical, the author seeks to situate the modern in contemporary cultural practice. She sets up an ideological vantage point to view modernism along its multiple tracks in India and the third world.The essays divide into three sections.
