Mangroves, the unique ecosystem is in very much stressed or threatened condition throughout the globe in general and in Indian territories, as well. Over all distribution of these mangrove plants in the Indian territories and abroad and their present status within India are dealt vividly by short description with key characters of these available Indian mangroves and mangrove associated plants along with its photographs, mentioning of habits and habitat condition, correct identifying key characters, nomenclature, taxonomic status, local and common names, etc. Besides these, the mention of the world distribution of mangroves and the world mangrove species along with their ideal habitat conditions are also dealt. Necessary photographs and description of their diverse aerial root system, canopy structure, flowers, fruits, viviparous germinated hypocotyles and interesting seedling developmental stages are also highlighted; as such, it is the most important handbook and as the field guide book for identifying each and every individual Indian mangrove plant species, along with their status. The overall conservation strategies of these mangroves, need for coastal zone stabilisation or protection of coastal areas by conserving these mangrove ecosystem and the need for maintaining the coastal fisheries potentialities with the mangroves are also dealt critically with the mention of sustainable utilization and relationship of these coastal and estuarine fisheries and mangrove ecosystem, as well. Wetlands are among the world’s most productive environments with countless species of plants and animals, as well as humans, dependent upon them for survival. Moreover, they provide many societal benefits including water quality improvement, flood storage, shoreline erosion control, and opportunities for recreation, education, and research. The conservation of inland wetlands is thus critical, and it is vital that they are protected in situ. The Handbook of Research on Monitoring and Evaluating the Ecological Health of Wetlands highlights the challenges of wetland conservation and current scenarios of existing wetlands and their effective management. The book also promotes the inventory, assessment, and monitoring of wetlands through a discussion of practical approaches, methodologies, and techniques. The strategies covered in this book can be applied in situ, depending on the wetland in which they will be applied. It covers the most cost-effective techniques in conservation of wetland technologies and the most cutting-edge research on monitoring of wetland health and its applications. Covering topics such as forest soil, greenhouse gasses, and ecological rejuvenation, it is an ideal resource for conservators, environmentalists, executives, policymakers, government officials, professionals, researchers, academicians, and students working in ecological management and wetland conservation fields.

'Biodiversity' is becoming the keyword for sustaining human society and the ecosystem. The impacts of development on biological diversity, over exploitation of resources of commercial value, changes in land use and land cover, and fragmentation of habitats have led to fastest rate of decline in biodiversity in the 20th Century. This publication provides an insight into the concept of biodiversity, its value and uses, aspects of conservation of material and traditional knowledge, the linkage between ethnic communities and biodiversity, and several other topics of interest in a lucid and user-friendly manner.

India is one of the 17 mega biodiversity countries in the world. However, taxonomic inventory of India biota is far from complete. The goal of this publication is to identify and describe the mangrove plant species of India. Towards this objectives, the taxonomical identity and distribution of mangrove species found in the country is revised and described. During field investigations, each species of mangrove and associated plants were identified and sampled. Description and high-resolution image material for each species is provided, which allows easy identification of individual species. This information is needed for coastal management planning and policy development, especially in relation to shoreline rehabilitation and expansion of appropriate shoreline livelihood projects in the face of climate change and sea level rise. Furthermore, global distribution of each mangrove species and its conservation status is provided. Voucher specimens of all the mangrove species reported in the text have been deposited at CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow (LWG) as well in Annamalai University and regional centres of Botanical Survey of India as reference collections for the country.
