Excerpt from Habs/Haer Review, 1993 Economic Stimulus Bill Proposed The new Clinton Administration came to Washington with a commitment to get the economy moving again. This translated into the Economic Stimulus Supplemental Appropriation for Fiscal Year 1993 Rebuild America. We at habs/haer saw it as an opportunity for not only providing jobs but for documenting historic structures that for decades we haven't had funds to document. Habs/haer developed approximately thirty projects that were to be funded through million under this appropriation. The appropriation was contested by the Republicans and on April 20th I went to bed after hearing that the Senate Republican caucus was going to contest the package but they were going to let the summer jobs portion through. The next morning I woke up to the news that the entire package had gone down to defeat late the previous night. This is detailed in Appendix B, pages 87-92. Everybody has value and should be made to feel that way. That was one of our fundamental tenets, and we all bough into it completely. We believed that if you've built the right culture-a culture of inclusion-then an important contribution could just as likely come from a guy who says he's keeping his fingers crossed to hang on with the team as from one of the stars. Two decades of lockouts, soaring ticket prices, and on-ice tinkering have convinced many hard-core fans that the NHL's long-time commissioner Gary Bettman is the devil in disguise, but this book examines his motivations, peels back his often prickly demeanor, and explains how he manages to lead, confound, and keep order. It details the unlikely ascension of a fatherless Jewish kid from Long Island—who never played hockey and can barely skate—to the sport's biggest job. The seven-fold increase in gross revenue during Bettman's 20-year tenure as NHL commissioner makes him a business success story, and on his watch, professional hockey has also expanded far beyond its regional strongholds. By taming the NHL's famously fractious owners, all but busting its players' union, and enforcing a lawyerly discipline even on trash talk, Bettman has become a figure of almost unrivaled power in the business of sports, and this biography delves into how his influence shapes rival leagues in other countries, dictates the schedule of the Olympic Winter Games, and spills onto the ice itself.

National Bestseller The definitive history of the Montreal Canadiens – to coincide with their Centenary in 2009. Before there were slapshots, Foster Hewitt, or even an NHL, there were the Canadiens. Founded on December 4, 1909, the team won its first Stanley Cup in 1916. Since then, the Canadiens have won 23 more championships, making them the most successful hockey team in the world. The team has survived two wars, the Great Depression, NHL expansion, and countless other upheavals, thanks largely to the loyalty of fans and an extraordinary cast of players, coaches, owners, and managers. The Montreal Canadienscaptures the full glory of this saga. It weaves the personalities, triumphs, heartaches, and hysteria into a compelling narrative with a surprise on every page. It sheds new light on old questions – how the team colours were chosen, how the Canadiens came to be known as the Habitants – and goes behind the scenes of tumultuous recent events still awaiting thorough examination: why Scotty Bowman was passed over as general manager after Sam Pollock resigned; why Pollock’s successor, Irving Grunman, failed; why Serge Savard was dumped as GM so hastily despite his record. Colourful and controversial,The Montreal Canadiensis the history of a team that has been making news for 100 years – and continues to do so with the return of legendary player Bob Gainey as general manager, determined to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal.
