Mother love trumps a billionaire ex every time. Nina Benoit was young, restless, and so very naive to believe she'd be anything more than a phase for New Orleans playboy Daire Warren. He made use of her sharpshooting skills when dark forces threatened his sorry hide then hung her out to dry. She will not allow her son, blessed with his mother's skill, to be used by this man for any purpose. But Daire must sell Nina on the truth. The dark forces emanating from a clandestine government operation has Nina in the crosshairs. And if Daire can find her hiding out in the sleepy, little town of Cottontail, Virginia, all bets are off. One thing is sure, though. He'll save the woman he loves, even ifs she hates him. Even if she kept him from knowing his own child. If you’ve got two hours to blow and need a jolt of gritty, regret filled, deliciously satisfying romantic suspense thrills, GUN FOR HIRE is your huckleberry.

In this “fun, inspiring, and delightful” debut, a seventh grader finds his voice—and his inner diva—as he navigates friendship, family, first crushes and more (School Library Journal). Seventh-grader Martin McLean has always been surrounded by people who can express themselves. His mother is an artist, his colorful Tío Billy works in theater, and his best friends Carmen and Pickle are outgoing charmers. But Martin can only find the right words when he’s answering a problem at a Mathletes competition—until his tío introduces him to the world of drag. In a swirl of sequins and stilettos, Martin creates his fabulous drag queen alter ego, Lottie León. As Lottie, he is braver than he’s ever been; but as Martin, he doesn’t have the guts to tell anyone outside of his family about her. Not Carmen and Pickle, not his fellow Mathletes, and definitely not Chris, an eighth-grader who gives Martin butterflies. When Martin discovers that his first-ever drag show is the same night as an important Mathletes tournament, he must find a way to pull off both appearances—and channel his inner drag superstar.

Blackface minstrelsy, the nineteenth-century performance practice in which ideas and images of blackness were constructed and theatricalized by and for whites, continues to permeate contemporary popular music and its audience. Harriet J. Manning argues that this legacy is nowhere more evident than with Michael Jackson in whom minstrelsy’s gestures and tropes are embedded. During the nineteenth century, blackface minstrelsy held together a multitude of meanings and when black entertainers took to the stage this complexity was compounded: minstrelsy became an arena in which black stereotypes were at once enforced and critiqued. This body of contradiction behind the blackface mask provides an effective approach to try and understand Jackson, a cultural figure about whom more questions than answers have been generated. Symbolized by his own whiteface mask, Jackson was at once ‘raced’ and raceless and this ambiguity allowed him to serve a whole host of others’ needs - a function of the mask that has run long and deep through its tortuous history. Indeed, Manning argues that minstrelsy’s assumptions and uses have been fundamental to the troubles and controversies with which Jackson was beset.
