Los cuarenta años que median entre 1480 y 1520 en las que centra su trabajo J. R. Hale son los más atractivos del Renacimiento. En otros libros de historia hay abundantes referencias a las figuras más representativas (los Borgias y los Médicis, Maquiavelo y Erasmo, Leonardo y Miguel Ángel). También aquí se les contempla, si bien al autor le preocupa en mayor grado dar a conocer al lector –especialistas y profanos encontrarán aquí incitantes sugerencias– el modo de vivir común al mayor número posible de personas, cuál era su actitud ante cuestiones fundamentales, como la justicia social, el amor, el tiempo, el arte, las relaciones personales y familiares, la vida en el campo y en las ciudades, la religión, la política, la enseñanza y la ciencia. Resulta difícil evaluar los testimonios, casi siempre deshilvanados, que permitan reconstruir la mentalidad de la mayoría. El autor, fiel a su propósito, se arriesga por esta vía, y el acercamiento que logra enriquece la visión que el lector adquiere con respecto al pasado, especialmente dentro del diario acontecer, que cambia tan lentamente a través de los siglos.

In the five hundred years covered by this volume there was scarcely a year which passed without either war or some open demonstration of hostility between the many sovereign powers which governed Europe. States and peoples lived under the shadow of war, were ceaselessly prompted to consider the possibility of war, had to find ways of dealing with the consequences of war. This volume in the Origins of the Modern State in Europe series focuses on the crucial role of war in the formation of state systems. It starts from the assumption that interstate rivalries and conflicts were at the heart not only of the demarcation of territories, but also of the ever-growing need to mobilize resources for warfare. Institutionalization was consequently highly dependent on such competition. It was for military reasons, and with military aims, that the state secured control of time and space, both at sea and on land. The Origins of the Modern State in Europe series arises from an important international research programme sponsored by the European Science Foundation. The aim of the series, which comprises seven volumes, is to bring together specialists from different countries, who reinterpret from a comparative European perspective different aspects of the formation of the state over the long period from the beginning of the thirteenth to the end of the eighteenth century. One of the main achievements of the research programme has been to overcome the long-established historiographical tendency to regard states mainly from the viewpoint of their twentieth-century borders.

El autor resalta el optimismo que impregna la sociedad del siglo XVI, y que se refleja, más allá del esplendor cultural y del arte, en la denominada «recuperación» demográfica. Al análisis de los factores del cambio de tendencia le sigue el del Humanismo, el desarrollo filosófico y científico y las reformas religiosas. Asimismo, destaca el carácter internacional de la Europa de la época, con el intercambio de hombres, ideas, estilos artísticos, comercio y monedas, a pesar de los conflictos bélicos y de la quiebra de la unidad religiosa que supone la Reforma. Las ciudades italianas, los Países Bajos, Francia y otros focos del Renacimiento, el auge de nacionalismos agresivos y los orígenes del Estado moderno completan el cuadro de este período.
