This practical book provides an extremely comprehensive, up-to-date, and easy-to-understand treatment of the entire GSM network and the signaling methods of its terrestrial interfaces. You learn how to analyze network problems, what measurements you have to take to solve them, and where in a scenario you will find the desired information or parameter. The book introduces you to all the interfaces between the GSM subsystems, starting with the Abis- and Air- Interface and continuing on to VLR's, HLR's and MSC's within the Network Switching Subsystem (NSS). You learn about the various signaling standards or methods used in GSM, including TCAP and MAP and how to apply this knowledge when working with GSM networks.

This revised edition of Communication Systems from GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband Second Edition (Wiley 2010) contains not only a technical description of the different wireless systems available today, but also explains the rationale behind the different mechanisms and implementations; not only the ‘how’ but also the ‘why’. In this way, the advantages and also limitations of each technology become apparent. Offering a solid introduction to major global wireless standards and comparisons of the different wireless technologies and their applications, this edition has been updated to provide the latest directions and activities in 3GPP standardization up to Release 12, and importantly includes a new chapter on Voice over LTE (VoLTE). There are new sections on Building Blocks of a Voice Centric Device, Building Blocks of a Smart Phone, Fast Dormancy, IMS and High-Speed Downlink Packet Access, and Wi-Fi-Protected Setup. Other sections have been considerably updated in places reflecting the current state of the technology. • Describes the different systems based on the standards, their practical implementation and design assumptions, and the performance and capacity of each system in practice is analyzed and explained • Questions at the end of each chapter and answers on the accompanying website make this book ideal for self-study or as course material

This book explains the evolutions of architecture for mobiles and summarizes the different technologies: – 2G: the GSM (Global System for Mobile) network, the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network and the EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) evolution; – 3G: the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) network and the HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) evolutions: - HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), - HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access), - HSPA+; – 4G: the EPS (Evolved Packet System) network. The telephone service and data transmission are the two main services provided by these networks. The evolutions are fundamentally dictated by the increase in the rate of data transmission across the radio interface between the network and mobiles. This book is intended as a readily understandable support to help students and professionals wishing to quickly acquire the main concepts of networks for mobiles understand the technologies deployed.

Due to the explosive global growth in the number of mobile subscribers, as well as the growth predicted in the mobile data segment, the need for improved spectrum efficiency on the radio interface becomes more and more important. Frequency hopping (FH) is an effective method for improving the spectrum efficiency. One of the advantages of FH is that it can be combined with other spectral efficiency improving features like power control, handover and reuse partitioning. Performance Enhancements in a Frequency Hopping GSM Network covers FH and some of the additional features in detail. It begins with an in-depth description of the basic concept of FH on link level as well as on system level. Different methods have been used for analysis, such as link level simulations, network level simulations and classic tele-traffic theory. Special features of Performance Enhancements in a Frequency Hopping GSM Network: Combines the practical experiences of operator and vendor with more theoretical research methods. An in-depth treatment of prevailing problems in GSM networks; Presentation of a new method, computer-aided network design (CAND), which has been developed to analyse the complex network structures of a GSM network. CAND provides the possibility for more realistic performance evaluations than conventional methods; Provides GSM-specific analysis of functionality improvements in power control, discontinuous transmission, and several handover algorithms; Explanation of the quality and capacity gains of features like the combination of FH and reuse partitioning, referred to as intelligent frequency hopping; A frequency planning method for FH GSM networks is presented. This method exploits the benefits from FH directly in the allocation process, increasing the overall frequency plan.
