In his preface to this devotional commentary on the Gospel of John, Meyer writes: "This is the Gospel of the Divine Life of Jesus. The eagle has always been its recognised emblem, as denoting its sublime and heavenly character. And, clearly, in its diction, its insight into the deepest truths, its repeated testimony to the Glory and Deity of our Lord, it holds a unique, place among the records of His life. It soars. It holds fellowship with the Throne. Its eyrie is in the Heart of God. And yet, in one of its aspects, this Gospel is as much the record of the Man Christ Jesus, as of the Only-begotten Son; and for this it is of inestimable worth to all who desire to follow in His steps. There is no part of Scripture more conducive to the culture of the inner life; and it is under this aspect that it is considered in the following pages." Originally published in 1948, this now-classic study by Merrill Tenney treats the Gospel of John as a literary unit and provides a straightforward analysis of the text. Tenney first outlines the structure of the Gospel, then offers a careful exposition of John’s text according to six major periods of Christ’s life, and finally presents a topical analysis of the Gospel. Not a critical commentary but, rather, a well-organized guidebook complemented by helpful charts and diagrams, Tenney’s John: The Gospel of Belief, reissued in this new format, will continue helping pastors, teachers, students, and other Bible readers grasp the aim and major themes of John.
