A flavour of this book ... This small disk is called Carmichael’s Amulet and it commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria by the dates 1837 and 1897. These are the dates of her 60 years reign. To the right can be seen a mould that is carved from wood. It seems to have been professionally made in a large block that is well finished and furnished with a hook for hanging up. The mould may have produced butter pats or terrines for a Victorian celebration. As well as the Diamond Jubilee dates it commemorates the Record Reign that Queen Victoria had achieved in 1896 after being monarch for longer than George III. These images were taken by the authors as this book was being written and so they do not appear in the text which summarises an enormous variety of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs. Inside you will find a unique view of Victoriana that was made to celebrate one event at the height of the powers of the British Empire. The souvenirs will give you a glimpse into Victorian creative ingenuity as well as the thinking and beliefs of people in 1897.

"Based on extensive primary archival materials, Faith and Action is a comprehensive history of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati over the past 175 years. Fortin paints a picture of the Catholic Church's involvement in the city's development and contextualizes the changing values and programs of the Church in the region. He characterizes the institution's history as one of both faith and action. From the time of its founding to the present, the way Catholics in the archdiocese of Cincinnati have viewed their relationship with the rest of society has changed with each major change in society. In the beginning, while espousing separation of church and state and religious liberty, they wanted the Church to adapt to the new American situation. In the mid-nineteenth century Cincinnati Catholics dealt with a dominant Protestant culture and, at times, a hostile environment, whereas a century later it had become much more a part of the American mainstream. Throughout most of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most Catholics saw themselves as outsiders. During the past fifty years, however, Cincinnati Catholics, like most of their counterparts in the United States, have felt more confident and viewed themselves as very much a part of American society"--Publisher's description

Cynthia Dobbs is dying. Despite her grave diagnosis, she refuses to give up without exploring every possible cure. Cynthia comes from a long line of fighters, and she is determined-she won't end her lineage. Family lore endures that Cynthia's great-grandmother was cured in 1906 by the illustrious Dr. Smith at his world-renowned cedar water sanatorium and health resort. Dr. Smith offered health and longevity through secret water tonics. Cynthia sets out for Egg Harbor City to probe the prospects. Egg Harbor City holds both hope and mystery for Cynthia as she arrives and opens up her grandmother's old home. As she settles in, though, she is both shunned and welcomed by the locals-some believe that her grandmother was a witch and that the house is haunted, while others quickly embrace her charming personality. Despite eerie incidences at her grandmother's home, Cynthia is undeterred. She dives into the museum's memorabilia, where she meets Kyle Dwyer, a man fighting his own decades-old demons. Join Cynthia and Kyle as they dig deep into the museum's archives, their romance blossoms, and the mystery of the tonics deepens.
