Globalization has altered in significant ways the tools available to regulate international commerce. One result is the emergence of ethics codes, codes of responsible conduct, and best practice codes designed to win adherence to internationally acceptable norms of conduct on the part of corporations and other organizations interacting in the global market place. This volume looks at these developments with particular focus on five topic areas: respect for human rights, treatment of labor, bribery and corruption, environmental protection, and international finance and the control of money laundering. What is significant about these developments is the emerging emphasis on self-regulation as the primary method for raising standards of corporate conduct. The contributors examine the reasons for the emergence of ethical codes and the phenomenon of self-regulation within the context of globalization and look at the role of national governments, international government institutions and other international organizations in shaping and enforcing them. They also study the implications of these developments for corporate governance and the changing roles of national and international institutions in the regulation of international commerce.

The globalization of business that has been bringing about worldwide economic integration provides a crucial step in the transition process from the 20th century to the new millenium. At the center of globalization, stand the multinational corporations. In corporations, the opportunity now exists to develop a new moral perspective and a new paradigm of global social development. A social ethics for multinational business has been developing for several decades, in part at least, because of an increasingly higherlevel of moral accountability. Multinational corporations have been following a new paradigm of global social development in sharp contrast with the traditional paradigm of maximizing the bottom line. The new paradigm of globalized business emphasizes an ethic of social responsibility and an ethical approach to the management of multinational corporations. [Author's abstract].

This practical and engaging book provides a coherent approach to global business responsibility and ethics based on the latest research, theory, and practice. The authors incorporate numerous interesting and current real world examples to support the argument that corporations need to - and can - identify and implement processes that foster ethical conduct, ensure basic human rights, protect the natural environment, and enhance social justice wherever businesses operate around the globe. "Global Business Citizenship" combines elements of political theory, stakeholder relationships, business ethics, corporate social performance, accountability and measurement, and organizational change. Its practical approach encompasses "best practices" in stakeholder management, experiments in applying corporate values to local conditions, and social environmental auditing and reporting. Focusing on the strategic alignment and change management process for implementing business citizenship principles and practices, it is an essential supplement for any course concerned with ethics and social responsibility in today's global business climate.
