La globalización representa nuestro mundo actual. Gracias, en gran medida a las nuevas tecnologías, nuestro planeta se está reduciendo a la mínima expresión: las herramientas de comunicación, como internet, nos permiten con tan solo un click conocer lo que está pasando al otro lado del mundo en décimas de segundo. No obstante, y como veremos, la globalización no solo atiende a factores comunicativos sino que también afecta a las propias personas en su día a día: las marcas comerciales, los comportamientos sociales, la forma de vestir o el ocio son muchos de los otros componentes que también forman parte de este mundo globalizado.

Este libro es fruto de la labor docente de las autoras a lo largo de varios cursos académicos en la asignatura de Economía Mundial que se imparte en las licenciaturas de Economía y Administración de Empresas de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales y Derecho y Administración de Empresas en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Nowadays we are fortunate enough to be experiencing a boom in human rights - an enormous increase of their importance in the international sphere at all levels (political, economic, social, legal and moral). For the first time the condition of the individual as “citizen,” and not just as “subject,” has gained importance. Individuals, and not only states, have now become the subjects of international law, as a result of the boom in humanitarian law and international criminal law. However, although there have been many battles won and goals met concerning human rights, the war against injustice continues and the fight has not ended. It is necessary to stay alert and to avoid a potentially paralyzing self-complacency. This collection focusses on topics that are particularly relevant for the present era. It examines issues such as multiculturalism, globalization, international criminal justice (specifically third and fourth generation rights) and, within this thematic framework, the problems that have come about as a result of the expanding reach of the Internet and of new biomedical advances. In addition, it explores the increasingly urgent challenge of how to respond to international terrorism, in view of worldwide events since September 11, 2001, and its resulting aftermath. Originally published in Spanish, this thought-provoking collection will be of interest to human rights scholars and practitioners alike.

Globalizations from Below uses a Constructivist International Relations approach that emphasizes the centrality of normative power to analyze and compare the four globalizations ‘from below.’ These are: (1) the counter-hegemonic globalization represented by the ‘movement of movements’ of alter-globalization transnational social activists, who try to put an end to the Neoliberal nature of the Western-centered globalization ‘from above’; (2) the non-hegemonic globalization enacted by ‘ant traders’ that are part of the transnational informal economy; (3) the partially similar Chinese-centered globalization, whose entrepreneurial migrants are strongly influenced and instrumentalized by the Chinese state; and (4) the first wave globalization ‘from below’ that paralleled (and outlived) the 1870–1914 globalization ‘from above.’ This book identifies their common features and uses them to define the concept of globalization ‘from below’ as a set of socio-economic or socio-political processes that involve large transnational flows of people, goods, and/or ideas characterized at least in part by informality. They are enacted by entrepreneurial or activistic individuals who either take advantage of the normative power of the hegemon at the origin of an international order and an associated globalization ‘from above,’ or – explicitly or implicitly – transgress, contest, and try to redefine dominant economic, legal, political, and socio-cultural norms, thus challenging the existing international order and globalization ‘from above.’ By constructing a unified theoretical framework, this book attempts to open a new field of interdisciplinary research that should take globalizations ‘from below’ out of their current scholarly marginality. This is one of the first scholarly works to collectively present more than one globalization ‘from below,’ and will be of great interest to students, scholars, and researchers of International Relations, International Political Economy, Development Studies, Economic History, Anthropology, Diaspora Studies, and Chinese Studies.

Integralism, Altruism and Reconstruction: Essays in Honor of Pitirim A. Sorokin presenta el sociòleg de nacionalitat russa Pitirim A. Sorokin (1889-1968) des de la perspectiva del pensament sociològic contemporani. Els nou autors que participen en aquest llibre, originaris de diverses universitats nord-americanes i espanyoles, reflexionen sobre els períodes brillants i obscurs de la trajectòria acadèmica de Sorokin. Després d’haver experimentat una vida política molt activa a Rússia, Sorokin emigrà als Estats Units durant els anys 30, on esdevingué una figura acadèmica de gran prestigi. Arribà a ser director del departament de sociologia de la Universitat de Harvard de 1930 a 1944, fundà el Harvard Research Center in Creative Altruism el 1949 i fou nominat com a president de la American Sociological Association el 1964. Ara bé, malgrat la seua distingida i prolífica carrera acadèmica, moltes de les seues obres han estat ignorades en gran manera per la sociologia convencional. Aquest llibre descriu les raons per les quals el destí de Sorokin prengué una direcció tan desafortunada i posa en relleu l’existència avui mateix d’un creixent grup d’acadèmics interessats a revitalitzar aquest important teòric i autor.

Our world today is not only a world in crisis but also a world in profound movement, with increasingly large numbers of people joining or forming movements: local, national, transnational, and global.
