The Global Oral Health Status Report (GOHSR), released in November 2022, serves as a reference for policymakers, provides orientation for a wide range of stakeholders across different sectors and guides advocacy towards better prioritization of oral health in global, regional and national contexts. It is the first ever comprehensive picture of the global oral disease burden, the resources available and highlights challenges and opportunities to accelerate progress towards universal coverage for oral health. To ensure translation and relevance of the report’s findings for countries, and in accordance with WHO regional offices, regional summaries based on the data from the GOHSR have been developed. These are short overviews, highlighting regional specific issues with supporting maps showing distributions of different indicators across countries in the region.

This regional summary draws on the WHO Global oral health status report, published in 2022, which provides a comprehensive overview of the global oral disease burden, the global health importance of oral health and the impact of oral diseases over the life course. The summary focuses on the oral health status in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and is split into four sections: (a) oral diseases are global and regional health problems; (b) the burden of the main oral diseases; (c) key challenges and opportunities towards oral health for all in the Eastern Mediterranean Region; and (d) road map towards UHC for oral health 2030.
