This volume explores the evolving relationship between health and security in today's interdependent world, and offers policy guidelines for effective global health action. The 15 chapters in this volume represent invited contributions from distinguished leaders in global health, commissioned by Harvard University's Global Equity Initiative, a research unit supporting the work of the international Commission on Human Security.

Human security is becoming increasingly pronounced in recent years due to changes in the security landscape of world politics. Yet, inter-state relations have continued to dominate security concerns in East Asia. Human Security: Securing East Asia’s Future timely examines the fundamental issues causing human insecurities and evaluates the extent of which human security plays a role at the state and regional levels. This new Handbook presents an overview of cutting-edge research in the growing field of global health security. Over the past decade, the study of global health and its interconnection with security has become a prominent and rapidly growing field of research. Protecting and promoting health is inherently a political endeavor that requires a sophisticated understanding of the distribution and use of power. The increasing emergence, re-emergence, and spread of deadly infectious diseases which pose health, economic, security and ethical challenges for states and people around the world, has given rise to an important global debate. The actual or potential burden of infectious diseases is sometimes so great that governments treat them as threats to national security. However, such treatment potentially increases the risk that emergency disease-control measures will be ineffective, counterproductive and/or unjust.
