"Geschichte der Philologien" (bis 2019 "Geschichte der Germanistik") feiert 2021 ihr 30-jähriges Bestehen. Seit 1991 war die Zeitschrift das Organ germanistischer Wissenschaftsgeschichtsforschung. Aus der Beobachtung anderer, benachbarter Philologien wurde allmählich eine Komparatistik der Fächer, im Sinn des historischen Vergleichs und der philosophischen Reflexion. Neben Forschungsbeiträgen zu den einzelnen Philologien werden Inedita präsentiert, Neuerwerbungen in Literatur- und Universitätsarchiven vorgestellt und Forschungsprojekte skizziert. Jedes Doppelheft enthält eine ausführliche, kommentierte Bibliographie der Neuerscheinungen. Lexicon Grammaticorum is a biographical and bibliographical reference work on the history of all the world's traditions of linguistics. Each article consists of a short definition, details of the life, work and influence of the subject and a primary and secondary bibliography. The authors include some of the most renowned linguistic scholars alive today. For the second edition, twenty co-editors were commissioned to propose articles and authors for their areas of expertise. Thus this edition contains some 500 new articles by more than 400 authors from 25 countries in addition to the completely revised 1.500 articles from the first edition. Attention has been paid to making the articles more reader-friendly, in particular by resolving abbreviations in the textual sections. Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.

The 17 contributions in this volume pursue a positioning of the philologies, which - based on the 'Volksgeist' (popular spirit) of the 19th century and the cultural studies of the 20th century - must reposition themselves in the 21st century. The contributions address questions such as: What changes are occurring with increasing globalization? Are national literatures increasingly being absorbed into the so-called "world literature"? The authors come from the fields of Romance studies, German studies and English studies. They deal with topics of literary historiography, canonization, comparative literature, and also questions of the future.
