Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.

"Geschichte der Philologien" (bis 2019 "Geschichte der Germanistik") feiert 2021 ihr 30-jähriges Bestehen. Seit 1991 war die Zeitschrift das Organ germanistischer Wissenschaftsgeschichtsforschung. Aus der Beobachtung anderer, benachbarter Philologien wurde allmählich eine Komparatistik der Fächer, im Sinn des historischen Vergleichs und der philosophischen Reflexion. Neben Forschungsbeiträgen zu den einzelnen Philologien werden Inedita präsentiert, Neuerwerbungen in Literatur- und Universitätsarchiven vorgestellt und Forschungsprojekte skizziert. Jedes Doppelheft enthält eine ausführliche, kommentierte Bibliographie der Neuerscheinungen. Dieser Band geht der Frage nach, warum die Deutschen seit Jahrhunderten ohne Zögern die antiken Germanen als ihre unmittelbaren Vorfahren betrachtet haben und vielfach noch heute betrachten. Obgleich der methodische Fortschritt in den Wissenschaften hat erkennen lassen, dass damit einer konstruierten Kontinuität und einer erfundenen Tradition das Wort geredet wird, dienten im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert die 'freiheitsliebenden' und 'kriegerischen' Germanen der Antike zur Motivation zeitgenössischen Handelns. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes analysieren die vielschichtigen Prozesse dieser - oft wider besseres Wissen vollzogenen - Gleichsetzung und ihre politischen Konsequenzen. Der Band bündelt die Erträge einer interdisziplinären Tagung, die vom 1. bis 3. Dezember 2000 in Freiburg veranstaltet wurde.

An essential critical history of German studies as an academic discipline. German studies has confronted many crises, as well as severe criticism and self-criticism, and yet it has managed to maintain its disciplinary system through every upheaval--the revolution of 1848, the establishment of the Second Reich in 1871, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi Third Reich, the Second World War and the reconstruction era, the creation and reunification of the two German states. Pier Carlo Bontempelli focuses on this continuity, dating back to the early nineteenth century, when the "founding fathers" of Germanistik secured its status by grounding it in a set of fixed principles, revived by each successive generation of scholars in order to legitimize their position of power--and to ensure their capacity for cultural reproduction. Using the works of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu, Bontempelli investigates the institution and principles of German studies and critically reconstructs its history. Mindful of the mechanisms of choice and domination operating at every turn in this history, his book exposes the repressed social and political history of German studies.

Even before Jean-Luc Godard and other members of the French New Wave championed Hollywood B movies, aesthetes and cineasts relished the raw emotions of genre films. This contradiction has been particularly true of horror cinema, in which the same images and themes found in exploitation and splatter movies are also found in avant-garde and experimental films, blurring boundaries of taste and calling into question traditional distinctions between high and low culture. In Cutting Edge, Joan Hawkins offers an original and provocative discussion of taste, trash aesthetics, and avant-garde culture of the 1960s and 1970s to reveal horror's subversiveness as a genre. In her treatment of what she terms "art-horror" films, Hawkins examines home viewing, video collection catalogs, and fanzines for insights into what draws audiences to transgressive films. Cutting Edged provides the first extended political critique of Yoko Ono's rarely seen Rape and shows how a film such as Franju's Eyes without a Face can work simultaneously as an art, political, and splatter film. The rediscovery of Tod Browning's Freaks as an art film, the "eurotrash" cinema of Jess Franco, camp cults like the one around Maria Montez, and the "cross-over" reception of Andy Warhol's Frankenstein are all studied for what they reveal about cultural hierarchies. Looking at the low aspects of high culture and the high aspects of low culture, Hawkins scrutinizes the privilege habitually accorded "high" art -- a tendency, she argues, that lets highbrow culture off the hook and removes it from the kinds of ethical and critical social discussions that have plagued horror and porn. Full of unexpected insights, Cutting Edge calls fora rethinking of high/low distinctions -- and a reassigning of labels at the video store.

New essays on diverse topics from the Age of Goethe, with a special section on Goethe scholarship's role in the establishment of Germanistik. The Goethe Yearbook is a publication of the Goethe Society of North America, encouraging North American Goethe scholarship by publishing original English-language contributions to the understanding of Goethe and other authors of the Goethezeit while also welcoming contributions from scholars around the world. Volume 19 of the Goethe Yearbook continues to investigate the connection between Goethe's scientific theories and his aesthetics, with essays on his optics and his plant morphology. A special section examines the central role that Goethe philology has had in establishing practices that shaped the history of Germanistik as a whole. The yearbookalso includes essays on legal history and the novella, Goethe Lieder, esoteric mysticism in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, and Werther's sexual pathology. The volume also includes three essays re-examining Goethe's aesthetics in the context of the history of deconstruction, as well as the customary book review section.
