Writes that he has not list[ed] the characters mentioned yesterday to any mortal. Declares that Arthur St. Clair has arrived, and that he has not seen him yet but will this morning.

First part includes a printed letter from George Washington asking the Secretary of War (Henry Knox) to publish a statement regarding the United States' attempts for the re-establishment of peace and friendship with the Indians. The second part is Knox's response to this request in which he states the The causes of the existing Hostilities between the United States, and certain Tribes of Indians North-West of the Ohio, stated and explained from official and authentic Documents... Noted as written at the War department and that it was printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by David C. Claypoole.

Countersigned by Henry Knox. Instructs Knox regarding his conduct (notes that the principles imparted are to remain secret). Indicates that the Government of the United States are determined that their administration of Indian Affairs shall be directed with justice and humanity. Refers to Knox's negotiations with the Creeks. Text is obscured due to a large water stain on page two.

Seeks an evaluation of Joseph Habersham, in order to find an appropriate federal appointment for him. Washington also asks advice on the law abilities of John Houstoun, for a possible appointment to Associate Judge for the Supreme Court. Marked confidential. Marked Private. From a prior meeting, Knox assured President Washington that Hull would accept his military appointment, and in this letter, discusses directly with Hull whether he will accept or decline. Also mentions General [John] Brooks' recent decision to decline the appointment.
