This book shows how the science of geomagnetism contributes to effective use of the magnetic compass for navigation. The book uses techniques from Geology, Instrument science, Magnetism, Chaos theory and Potential Fields applied to the geomagnetic landscape of the Balkan region and surroundings. The editors and contributors have assembled a comprehensive review of measurement, analysis, mapping and forecasting of magnetic declination in support of aeronautical safety.

A Complutense International Seminar on "Earth Sciences and Mathematics" was organised and held in Madrid at the Facultad de Ciencias Matemáticas of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid September, 13th-15th, 2006. Scientists from both fields, Mathematics and Earth Sciences, took part in this International Seminar, addressing scientific problems related with our planet from clearly complementary approaches, seeking to gain and learn from this dual approach and proposing a closer collaboration in the near future. This volume is the first one of a Topical Issue on "Earth Sciences and Mathematics" and contains papers addressing different topics as deformation modelling applied to natural hazards, inverse gravimetric problem to determine 3D density structure, advanced differential SAR interferometry, climate change, geomagnetic field, Earthquake statistics, meteorological studies using satellite images, climate energy balance models, study of soils properties, and multifractal data sets.

This volume provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of all the main areas linked to geomagnetic field observation, from instrumentation to methodology, on ground or near-Earth. Efforts are also focused on a 21st century e-Science approach to open access to all geomagnetic data, but also to the data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, and capacity building. Finally, modeling magnetic fields with different internal origins, with their variation in space and time, is an attempt to draw together into one place the traditional work in producing models as IGRF or describing the magnetic anomalies.

Treatise on Geophysics: Geomagnetism, Volume 5, provides an overview of the most important aspects of geomagnetism. The book begins by tracing the history of the study of geomagnetism. It then reviews global models of the Earth's magnetic field; the main sources of external magnetic field contributions; and the instruments and practices used to observe and measure the full range of features of the geomagnetic field. This conference was prompted by the occurrence of 5 encounters between passenger jetliners with drifting clouds of volcanic ash from the 1989-90 eruptions of Redoubt Volcano in Alaska. Examines 5 principal areas, including: how volcanoes produce ash clouds, the damage and impacts resulting from ash-cloud encounters, communications procedures for mitigating the risks from volcanic ash, the meteorology and modeling of ash-cloud movement, and methods for detection and tracking of ash clouds. 60 technical presentations are included.
