Connecting the massive landscapes of North and South America is Mexico and Central America. An area of fascination and study for geographers and other scholars from around the world, these lands and peoples have played important roles in the discoveries and distributions of civilizations, resources, and nations for millennia. These regions have stimulated a large mass of research and publications across the many sub-disciplines of geography. The Geography of Central America and Mexico: A Scholarly Guide and Bibliography by Thomas A. Rumneycollects, organizes, and presents as many of these scholarly publications as possible to help and encourage efforts in the teaching, study, and continuing scholarship of the geography of this area, which covers Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, as well as the region as a whole. Beginning with the region as a whole, each chapter that follows, one per nation, is divided by specific sub-disciplines of geography: cultural geography, social geography, economic geography, historical geography, physical and environmental geography, political geography, and urban geography. Each section is then further divided into by document type: atlases, books, book chapters, articles from scholarly journals, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. Although the majority of entries recorded focus on English-language works, selected entries written in Spanish, as well as French, German, and other languages are also included (with these entries’ titles then translated into English and noted accordingly).

It is a distressing truism that the human race during the last millennium has caused the exponential loss of plant genetic diversity throughout the world. This has had direct and negative economic, political and social consequences for the human race, which at the same time has failed to exploit fully the positive benefits that might result from conserving and exploiting the world's plant genetic resources. However, a strong movement to halt this loss of plant diversity and enhance its utilisation for the benefit of all humanity has been underway since the 1960's (Frankel and Bennett, 1970; Frankel and Hawkes, 1975). This initiative was taken up by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, 1992) that not only expounds the need to conserve biological diversity but links conservation to exploitation and development for the benefit of all. Article 8 of the Convention clearly states the need to develop more effective and efficient guidelines to conserve biological diversity, while Article 9, along with the FAO International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources, promotes the adoption of a complementary approach to conservation that incorporates both ex situ and in situ techniques.

Faced with widespread and devastating loss of biodiversity in wild habitats, scientists have developed innovative strategies for studying and protecting targeted plant and animal species in "off-site" facilities such as botanic gardens and zoos. Such ex situ work is an increasingly important component of conservation and restoration efforts. Ex Situ Plant Conservation, edited by Edward O. Guerrant Jr., Kayri Havens, and Mike Maunder, is the first book to address integrated plant conservation strategies and to examine the scientific, technical, and strategic bases of the ex situ approach. The book examines where and how ex situ investment can best support in situ conservation. Ex Situ Plant Conservation outlines the role, value, and limits of ex situ conservation as well as updating best management practices for the field, and is an invaluable resource for plant conservation practitioners at botanic gardens, zoos, and other conservation organizations; students and faculty in conservation biology and related fields; managers of protected areas and other public and private lands; and policymakers and members of the international community concerned with species conservation.

Following up on previous reports prepared for the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, and acknowledging FAO’s long tradition of technical work on the management of microorganisms and invertebrates in food and agriculture, the present paper responds to the need for a detailed assessment of the state of art in the conservation and sustainable use of soil microorganisms and invertebrates. It focuses on microorganisms and invertebrates contributing to nutrient cycling and the removal of contaminants from soils. The study is based on an extensive literature review and summarizes current views on the taxonomy, conservation, use and exchange of soil microorganisms and invertebrates, highlighting knowledge gaps, needs and challenges. In order to encompass the views of a wide range of stakeholders on knowledge gaps and critical issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of these organisms, the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) circulated an invitation to complete an open online survey to several hundred researchers, institutions and organizations worldwide. Twenty-seven responses were received and evaluated. AIT also organized an online expert workshop entitled Status and Trends of Conservation of Soil Microorganisms and Invertebrates, with Emphasis on Bioremediation and Nutrient Cycling Organisms. Twenty-six international experts participated in three parallel sessions: (i) nutrient cycling in soil; (ii) bioremediation in food and agriculture systems; and (iii) conservation of microorganisms and invertebrates, practices, policies and needs. The issues raised in the survey responses and at the workshop were taken into account in the drafting of the study.

This volume focuses on the procedures for determining the geographical indicator labels for globally traded goods in the Asia-Pacific region. The book is also available as Open Access.
