With the emerging dominance of digital technology, the time is ripe to reconsider the nature of the image. Some say that there is no longer a phenomenal image, only disembodied information (0-1) waiting to be configured. For photography, this implies that a faith in the principle of an "evidential force" – of the impossibility of doubting that the subject was before the lens – is no longer plausible. Technologically speaking, we have arrived at a point where the manipulation of the image is an ever-present possibility, when once it was difficult, if not impossible. What are the key moments in the genealogy of the Western image which might illuminate the present status of the image? And what exactly is the situation to which we have arrived as far as the image is concerned? These are the questions guiding the reflections in this book. This volume addresses the evolution of the visual in digital communities, offering a multidisciplinary discussion of the ways in which images are circulated in digital communities, the meanings that are attached to them and the implications they have for notions of identity, memory, gender, cultural belonging and political action. Contributors focus on the political efficacy of the image in digital communities, as well as the representation of the digital self in order to offer a fresh perspective on the role of digital images in the creation and promotion of new forms of resistance, agency and identity within visual cultures.

Existing art theory is obsessed by theories of spectatorship based on concepts of signification derived from language. This book shows the weakness of such a perspective, and, as an alternative, argues that individual aesthetic transformations of pictorial structure change one’s experience of space. In addition, it proves that this transformation is an ongoing process; pictorial art is progressively articulated through historical development, and is, therefore able to increase its cognitive and aesthetic scope. To support such a perspective, the book brings together ideas from Ernst Cassirer and Paul Crowther. Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms offers a profound way of understanding historical transformations in our experience of space, and Crowther’s work on imagination and aesthetics shows how this can be extended to pictorial space and the uniqueness of pictorial art. By combining the two approaches, it is demonstrated how pictorial art extends our basic involvement in, and cognition of, space, and provides it with a special kind of aesthetic meaning.

While it has traditionally been seen as a means of documenting an external reality or expressing an internal feeling, photography is now capable of actualizing never-existed pasts and never-lived experiences. Thanks to the latest photographic technologies, we can now take photos in computer games, interpolate them in extended reality platforms, or synthesize them via artificial intelligence. To account for the most recent shifts in conceptualizations of photography, this book proposes the term virtual photography as a binding theoretical framework, defined as a photography that retains the efficiency and function of real photography (made with or without a camera) while manifesting these in an unfamiliar or noncustomary form.

Drawings and paintings are made, and the process of making creates unique meanings that transform our perception of space-time and our sense of finitude. By using a phenomenological approach, the understanding of art practice and its relation to particular historical and cultural contexts can be significantly enhanced.
