A set of 12 practical tools to facilitate the implementation of Gender Mainstreaming Strategies (GEMS) in organizations, policies, programmes and projects. The tools are provided in the form of quick reference guides, checklists and tips for easy use. The first tool explains key concepts and strategies for gender equality in decent work promotion. The other tools are about GEMS in Decent Work Country Programmes, in organizations, research, the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes and projects, in budgeting, human resource development, media products and processes, meetings and training and in working environment. The final tool summarizes four main international labour standards for gender equality.

This report has three aims: reviewing the ILO's progress in assisting constituents to achieve gender equality in the world of work; highlighting its current efforts to implement International Labour Conference (ILC) resolutions and Governing Body decisions on promoting gender equality and mainstreaming it in the Decent Work Agenda; and providing background for constituents to chart a strategic course for future work.

This publication, which is the first part of a forthcoming ILO Toolkit on Gender Mainstreaming in the World of Work, presents a selection of practices which have been found to promote gender equality in their respective areas. Collectively, these practices demonstrate how ILO constituents - governments, trade unions and employers' organisations (and business communities) - have developed strategies to enhance gender equality in their respective structures and agendas.

Drawing on the practices and experiences of 25 countries, this book shows how governments, employers' organizations and trade unions around the world bring gender equality into their institutional structures, policies, programmes and activities. Examples from the good practices are cited under eight thematic categories such as the use of sex-disaggregated data; strategic partnerships; multi-sectoral approaches in legislation, policies and strategies; strategically placed gender expertise and more. Intended to stimulate fresh ideas and invite adaptation, the book provides step-by-step outlines of the actions undertaken to make the elements of good gender practice visible and comparable, and to make it easier for readers to find the aspects most relevant to their own situations.

This compilation of international labour standards that are especially relevant to gender equality updates the 2006 edition, as some important developments have since taken place. These include the 2008 International Labour Conference adoption of the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalisation, which places gender equality at the core of the Decent Work Agenda; the 2009 Conference Resolution concerning gender equality at the heart of decent work, which gives the ILO a 21st century framework for supporting gender-responsive policies in all its activities and programming; the 2010 Conference's HIV and AIDS Recommendation (No. 200); and its Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189) and accompanying Recommendation (No. 201). Full texts of the standards are presented in the following categories: fundamental principles and rights at work; maternity protection, work and family; employment promotion; specific categories concerning HIV, domestic workers, indigenous peoples, and migrant workers; and working conditions.

Articles discuss how gender mainstreaming has been understood in different organisations; provide examples of good work, which supports the empowerment of women; and look beyond gender mainstreaming to what new possibilities exist for transformation.
