In what sectors and contexts should work on gender and development involve men as beneficiaries? What are the issues confronting men who work in development projects that are committed to promoting gender equality? These questions were addressed by contributors to a seminar hosted by Oxfam GB, with the Center for Cross-Cultural Research on Women at the University of Oxford, in Oxford in June 2000.

Theoretical Perspectives on Gender and Development demytsifies the theory of gender and development and shows how it plays an important role in everyday life. It explores the evolution of gender and development theory, introduces competing theoretical frameworks, and examines new and emerging debates. The focus is on the implications of theory for policy and practice, and the need to theorize gender and development to create a more egalitarian society. Seeking to catalyze innovative thinking and practice within the field of women and gender in development, editors Jane S. Jaquette and Gale Summerfield have brought together scholars, policymakers, and development workers to reflect on where the field is today and where it is headed. The contributors draw from their experiences and research in Latin America, Asia, and Africa to illuminate the connections between women’s well-being and globalization, environmental conservation, land rights, access to information technology, employment, and poverty alleviation. Gender planning is not an end in itself but a means by which women, through a process of empowerment, can emancipate themselves.
