For three days in April of 1985, Cesena (Italy) was the scene of a national conference which was convened, by the Assessorato alia Cultura of this town under the auspices of the Societa Italiana di Logica e Filosofia delle Scienze (SILFS), in order to celebrate two historical milestones: the centenary of the birth of Niels Bohr, who was to become the leader of the orthodox, or Copenhagen, interpretation of quantum theory, and the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the most influential challenge to this interpretation which was contained in the well-known paper coauthored by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. The proceedings of the Cesena meeting, which are collected in the present volume, are intended to provide an exhaustive and panoramic view of the most recent investigations carried out by Italian scientists and philo sophers engaged in research on the foundations of quantum physics. What emerges is a critical review of, and alternative approaches to, the orthodox interpretation of the Copenhagen school.

This volume includes the papers presented during the high energy session of the first Orbis Scientiae held by the Center for Theo retical Studies, University of Miami. The Orbis met from January 7th to 12th, 1974 for the purpose of allowing scientists in various dis ciplines to acquaint each other with frontier problems of their respective disciplines. This Orbis Scientiae was the first of a new series of annual gatherings which have replaced the Coral Gables Conferences. These new meetings will include, in addition to physics, the main stay of the Coral Gables Conferences, other sciences and will allow scientists in the various disciplines represented to exchange views with each other as well as among them selves. The high energy sessions of the Orbis were devoted primarily to fundamental theories which attempt to unify a number of interactions in physics such as the electromagnetic and gravi tational forces, the electromagnetic and weak forces, or indeed all of the known interactions. Papers were also invited on other topics of cur rent interest in high energy physics and astro physics and they form part of this volume. v PREFACE This volume is not subdivided but the first half is devoted to fundamental theories and the second half to other subjects of current interest. The last paper, on stellar evolution, was presented at the Sixth Annual J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize Ceremonies by the recipient, Professor Edwin E. Salpeter of Cornell University.

First published in 1983, Problems in Class Analysis presents a coherent theory of labour’s domination by capital, based upon the notion of the capitalist nature of both the product relations and of the productive forces themselves, including science and technology. The author demonstrates that all knowledges are a product, direct or indirect, of economic relations, so that different knowledges will be the product of different social classes as determined by their position within economic production relations.
