In the early days of his anointed ministry, especially in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, Watchman Nee was greatly used by the Lord in preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, thereby winning many souls to the Lord. Though gradually he began to spend more time in building up the believers, and eventually towards the end of his active ministry in the late 1940’s he seemed to be occupied with ministering to those who ministered, he nevertheless remained at all times a herald of the glorious gospel of salvation. In the present volume, eight of the gospel messages which he gave in his early years have been selected to form a fuller presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are translated from the Chinese and appear in English for the first time. May the Spirit of God speak to the hearts of all who read this book and bring them into the glorious freedom which only Christ can give.

This book contains eight sermons delivered by the noted Chinese pastor/writer during the early years of his ministry.

Samuel Trott was one of the leading Baptist frontier ministers; a firm Predestinarian, an Exalter of Christ Alone, one who contended in earnest for that "faith once delivered unto the saints." Along with Gilbert Beebe, he was one the most influential of that group of Particular Baptists which came to be known as "Old School." With this volume of Trott's Writings, as selected from the Signs of the Times, we hope, under the blessing of the LORD, to attempt to establish afresh, a renewed evaluation and appreciation, of the writings of one who faithfully served his generation, in setting forth the Glories of Christ's Redemption-Grace; not only to those who were privileged to sit under his Ministry, but to many subsequent generations of Christ minded, I Cor.2:16, believers; even to this dark day, wherein the Essential Truths of the Gospel are, for the most part thrown aside, or trampled underfoot by men whose minds have been corrupted from the simplicity or singleness that is in Christ.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1968, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from January through early August 1968. Brother Lee remained in Los Angeles until the end of January, after which he visited Dallas, Texas; Birmingham, Alabama; and Orlando and Miami, Florida, on his way to Sao Paulo, Brazil. He returned to Los Angeles in late February. There is no record of his speaking in the cities outside Los Angeles. In the middle of March Brother Lee traveled to the eastern part of the United States, visiting Lubbock, Texas; Greensboro and High Point, North Carolina; Birmingham, Alabama; New York City and Buffalo, New York; Toronto, Canada; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mansfield and Cleveland, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Indianapolis, Indiana, before returning to Los Angeles in the middle of May. During this same trip he might also have visited Boston, Massachusetts; Montreal and Ottawa, Canada; and Louisville, Kentucky. The only record of Brother Lee's speaking on this trip was in High Point and New York City. At the end of May Brother Lee visited Dinuba, California, for two days and returned to spend the next week in Los Angeles. In the middle of June he traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada; San Francisco, California; and Corvallis, Oregon, before returning to Los Angeles, where he remained until the end of July. There is no record of his speaking in Las Vegas or Corvallis. From late July through the middle of November Brother Lee visited the Far East. From July 25 through August 22 he was in Taiwan, where he was joined by over one hundred forty brothers and sisters from the United States and Canada, along with some saints from Brazil, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Denmark, and West Germany. During those days he ministered in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. The contents of this volume are divided into eight sections, as follows: 1. Twenty-three messages given in Los Angeles, California, from January 1 through July 7. These messages are included in this volume under the title Various Messages in Los Angeles. Two pairs of messages were combined. 2. One message given in High Point, North Carolina, on March 24. This message is included in this volume under the title Message Givenin High Point, North Carolina. 3. Four messages given in New York City on March 30 and 31. They are included in this volume under the title Various Meetings in New York. 4. Four messages given in Dinuba, California, on May 29 and 30. These messages are included in this volume under the title Knowing and Experiencing Christ as the Spirit by Exercising Our Spirit. 5. Four messages given in San Francisco, California, from June 14 through 16. They are included in this volume under the title Life Principles for the Proper Practice of the Church Life. 6. Ten messages given in Los Angeles, California, on July 4 through 7. They are published in this volume under the title Christ in the Stage of the Spirit in the New Testament. 7. Twenty-four messages given in Los Angeles, California, on July 9 through 19. These messages were previously published as a twenty-two-chapter book under the title The Practical Expression of the Church. 8. Thirteen messages given in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from July 26 through August 3. The first ten messages, given in Taipei, were previously published as a standalone book in Chinese under the title Turning the Age and Living in the Spirit. These ten messages are included in this volume, together with the three messages given in Taichung and Kaohsiung, under the same title.

We live in a culture that thrives on performance and reward. If we study hard enough, we should get good grades. If we practice hard enough, we should win awards and trophies. If we work hard enough, we should get a promotion. It is easy to adopt this way of thinking in our spiritual lives. If our lives are good enough, we should get into heaven. If we just do more, God should be pleased. If we follow the rules, we should be better Christians. Nothing could be further from the truth.It is vital that we continually remind ourselves that the gospel is a gospel of grace. Why? Because it is easy to set aside the grace of God and live in a way that depends on us. We begin to rely on what we can do for ourselves, rather than what God can do, and has done for us through Jesus Christ. We continue to struggle with the truth that God's love is unconditional. Often we forget there is nothing we can do or have to do to earn it. We live less than abundant lives, thinking God is disappointed with us; that we don't measure up. As a result, believers end up living mediocre and passionless lives, trapped in the lie that they aren't good enough. Instead of choosing the freedom that is ours in Christ, like the Galatian believers, we choose slavery. Christians can make the serious mistake of believing that the gospel is reserved for salvation. The gospel is so much more than just about saving us. It is the hope that keeps us, while we wait for Jesus to return. It is what transforms us into Christ's image. The gospel is so powerful that we need to remind ourselves of it every day so we never take it for granted. Galatians is probably the harshest of Paul's letters. The dangerous position of the Galatian church and the critical nature of Paul's message drove him to write frankly and sharply to this group of Christians. For Paul, and for you and me, there is nothing more important than guarding the gospel of grace, because it is a serious offense to set aside the grace of God. Because "if righteousness came through the law, than Christ died in vain (Galatians 2:21)."So we do not set aside the grace of God. We cling to it. We stand on it. We hope in it. We grow in it. That's what Paul wanted for the Galatian believers, and that is what God wants for you and me. May this study cause you to live in the abundance of the one true gospel, the Gospel of grace!
