Bach's Well-tempered Clavier (or the 48 Preludes and Fugues) stands at the core of baroque keyboard music and has been a model and inspiration for performers and composers ever since it was written. The Capriccio in B-flat Major, "On the Departure of a Friend," is an unusually romantic-styled composition by Johann Sebastian Bach when he was 19 years of age, written upon the departure of his brother, Johann Jacob Bach, for his new duties in the service of King Carl XII of Sweden. Bach composed these Inventions in 1722/3 for the instruction in keyboard playing and composition of his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, who was then just 12.
