Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is a spectroscopic technique in which neutrons are used to probe the dynamics of atoms and molecules in solids and liquids. This book is the first, since the late 1960s, to cover the principles and applications of INS as a vibrational-spectroscopic technique. It provides a hands-on account of the use of INS, concentrating on how neutron vibrational spectroscopy can be employed to obtain chemical information on a range of materials that are of interest to chemists, biologists, materials scientists, surface scientists and catalyst researchers. This is an accessible and comprehensive single-volume primary text and reference source.

The Seventh International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy or SEICOLS'85 was held at the Maui Surf Hotel, Hawaii, USA, June 24 to 28, 1985. Like its predecessors at Vail, Megeve, Jackson Lake, Rottach-Egern, Jasper Park, and Interlaken, SEICOLS '85 aimed at providing an informal setting for active scientists to meet and discuss recent developments and applications in laser spectroscopy. The Conference site on the sunny sands of famed Kaanapali Beach on the Island of Maui, although perhaps not the traditional mountain resort, offered nonetheless an atmosphere most inspiring to creative discussions during the unscheduled afternoons. The Conference was truly international: 223 scientists represented 19 countries, including Australia, Canada, People's Republic of China, Denmark, Finland, France Germany (FRG), Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and U.S.A. The intense scientific program included 14 topical sessions with 59 invited talks. Approximately 60 additional invited papers and 16 postdeadline papers were presented during three lively evening poster sessions. The present Proceedings contain oral as well as poster and postdeadline papers. We thank all authors for the timely preparation of their manuscripts, now available to a wider audience. We would also like to thank the members of the International Steering Committee for their valuable suggestions and advice. Our special thanks go to the members of the Program Committee for their painstaking efforts.

Since the first stimulated emission pumping (SEP) experiments more than a decade ago, this technique has proven powerful for studying vibrationally excited molecules. SEP is now widely used by increasing numbers of research groups to investigate fundamental problems in spectroscopy, intramolecular dynamics, intermolecular interactions, and even reactions. SEP provides rotationally pre-selected spectra of vibrationally highly excited molecules undergoing large amplitude motions. A unique feature of SEP is the ability to access systematically a wide variety of extreme excitations localized in various parts of a molecule, and to prepare populations in specific, high vibrational levels. SEP has made it possible to ask and answer specific questions about intramolecular vibrational redistribution and the role of vibrational excitation in chemical reactions.

This long-awaited revised second edition of the standard reference on the subject has been considerably expanded to include such recent developments as novel control schemes, control of chaotic space-time patterns, control of noisy nonlinear systems, and communication with chaos, as well as promising new directions in research. The contributions from leading international scientists active in the field provide a comprehensive overview of our current level of knowledge on chaos control and its applications in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering. In addition, they show the overlap with the traditional field of control theory in the engineering community.
