Excerpt from French Ways and Their Meaning The Latin is this or that unless he makes the mental reservation, or at least seems so to me; but if this mental reservation is always implied, if it serves always as the background of the picture, the features portrayed may es cape caricature and yet bear some resem blance to the original. Lastly, the use of the labels anglo-saxon and Latin, for purposes of easy antithesis, must be defended and apologised for. One hears a good deal in these days about "What America can teach France;" though it is worthnoting that the phrase recurs less often now than it did a year ago.In any case, it would seem more useful to leave the French to discover (as they are doing every day, with the frankest appreciation) what they can learn from us, while we Americans apply ourselves tofinding out what they have to teach us. It is obvious that any two intelligent races are bound to havea lot to learn from each other; and there could hardly be a better opportunity for such an exchangeof experience than now that a great cause has drawn the hearts of our countries together while aterrible emergency has broken down most of the surface barriers between us.No doubt many American soldiers now in France felt this before they left home. When a man wholeaves his job and his family at the first call to fight for an unknown people, because that people isdefending the principle of liberty in which all the great democratic nations believe, he likes to thinkthat the country he is fighting for comes up in every respect to the ideal he has formed of it. Andperhaps some of our men were a little disappointed, and even discouraged, when they first came incontact with the people whose sublime spirit they had been admiring from a distance for three years. Some of them may even, in their first moment of reaction, have said to themselves: "Well, after all, the Germans we knew at home were easier people to get on with

Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Excerpt from A Textbook on French There are many ways in which man may make his thoughts known to others; as, for example, by grimace, gesture, the signs Of the deaf and dumb, symbols, pictorial writing, and pictures. But better than any or all Of these, are oral speech and written language. It is chiefly by this faculty Of speech that man is distinguished from the lower animals, and this faculty is so far above the power of expression possessed by brutes that many people believe human language to have been a gift of divine origin. Excerpt from A First French Book The mode of treating conjugation which is here adopted has been found decidedly successful in actual practise, and the labor of mastering the irregular verbs is thereby reduced to a minimum. The author is deeply indebted to his friend, Professor Henry A. Todd, of Columbia University, and to Dr. A. F. Nightingale, of Chicago, for many wise suggestions and much kindness in the preparation of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
